Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Angeles Crest 8/5

I'd love to do jschen's Baldy ride Sunday, but I can only do long rides on Saturday, so some of us are going to start at Red Box at 7:00 and ride to Grassy Hollow and back. It's 80 miles with 9000 feet of gain. We might have to walk through the washout on AC past Dawson Saddle, but there won't be any cars. Everyone is welcome and you can turn back anytime to shorten it.

Jason, you've done 60 miles of this ride, the 80 adds 10 more miles of climbing. Sure wish you guys could do a Baldy ride on a Saturday.

I hope to do Angeles Crest again sometime when I don't succumb to the heat. If I had known I was getting this Saturday off, I would have suggested a Saturday Baldy ride. Sorry... hopefully we'll ride together again sometime soon.

you and the harem are too fast of climbers for me! (plus... like i told them in the santa ana trail thread.... i REALLY don't want to drive to a ride at all this weekend! it gets expensive for gas and my poor car has enough miles for a year on it.... all in 5 months! EEK!)

I suggest you and your hubby sell your house, quit or transfer your jobs, and move out here...

caligurl, we always do these Angeles Crest rides in casual mode, there is too much climbing to hammer, plus it's too pretty to hurry through. I think you would really enjoy it and I hope sometime you will join us there.
Fixer, I will miss your photographic expertise. I love seeing the pictures on-line after the ride. Maybe you could teach me some of that stuff, I'm photo-challenged.

Sorry. I can only ride one day this weekend and it's going to be Sunday's GMR, GRR, Baldy trip.

I'm definitely up for Angeles Crest again some time soon though.

You do realize that the day we rode up there was only 85 degrees compared to 100 everywhere* else, right?

* = except for the beach, which is usually mobbed w/ punks, peds and traffic.

Hhhhmmmm... I think it was 85.

Perhaps it would just be better to say it was x - 15.

x = the temp everywhere else.

So that was a great ride, what cycling is supposed to be like. 8 riders showed and it was cold enough to wear a vest for the first time since winter. Clear, a little windy in spots, and beautiful all day. I just can't get over how nice it was after the heat wave a week ago. We saw our first car after about 20 minutes on the road and traffic was very light until the closed road where there were NO cars. Of course, we did have to cross the washout, which was a little scary, but not a problem. When we got to the turn-around at Grassy Hollow, the thermometer said 60 degrees. You can see GMR/GRR from up there and the back of Baldy, amazing. With 3 flats and stopping for snacks at Newcome Ranch on the way back we were out for 9 hours and 1 guys altimeter said 9600 feet of climbing. Awesome, wonderful epic ride! Pics may follow if zzzwillzzz will post them. https://www.grassyhollow.net/pages/main.html

Sounds nice and cool. Next time I'm up there I'll remember to bring a baselayer.

also cathy(?) and i talked about a two day ride to and from wrightwood. a day to take the back way to wrightwood, from the sfv through santa clarita, soledad, mount emma and over to big pines highway upto wrightwood. stay overnight in wrightwood in a cabin or two and ride back across the crest to home. and have someone drive up to wrightwood for a sag wagon. we were thinking late sept/early oct to hopefully hit the weather between too hot and too cold.

Will, I thought you took a few pics, I know some others did. A Wrightwood overnight sounds like fun, why do we need a sag vehicle?
