Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Schwinn Fastback, Fuji Newest?

I'm debating on whether I should go for an '06 fuji newest for around $600 (haven't haggled) or an '06 Schwinn Fastback 27 for $670(can't haggle). The Newest is a 2.0 with the sora and the tiagra in back. and the schwinn is tiagra with a 105 in back. The Schwinn has a funky saddle/seatpost combo, from a company by the name of SDG, but supposedly they're make a great combo that's just about lighter than anything else out there? Anyone have either? Which one would you suppose would lose value quicker? I know some would go for the tiagra/105 in a second over a sora bike, but I'm just wondering about quality and whether the schwinn is competitive in the market enough so that I don't lose $300 of the bike's value right after the purchase. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks!

I would think it's worth $70-100 to get the higher level, 9-speed set-up. But there is clearly more to the decision than that. I really don't know the bikes, their frame and other components' quality, etc.

What do you mean by split the difference? My budget will basically only allow $700-or-less bikes into the running.

I have last years fastback comp (all 105) and I really like The frame is similar to this years in terms of geometry. I feel schwinn is really trying to get back in the game and is pricing thier rides really competetively for a great Bike. I have been happy with mine.

I tried the cheapest Fuji Newest with the Schwinn Fastback Sport (which would be my bike). The Fuji felt really cheap, the adjustable stem is kinda cranky.

I'm 240 lbs, I commute every day with my schwinn, never gave me crap. I can whole heartedly recommend the schwinn.

I'm just under 5'10" and around 150lbs, so I don't think anything will creaking and twisting unless I really let the bike have it on a climb or a sprint.

Oh, and I would say that Fuji should have a better resale value. It's an OCP market out there.

But why are you looking forward to selling your bike? Get the BEST bike you can AFFORD period

Ride it til it craps out.
