First Century tomorrow (Marin Century anyone?)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Century tomorrow (Marin Century anyone?)

So i'm riding my first (organized event) century and have a few questions....

At the rest stops, do they give out energy drinks, or just water? I'm not picky about my energy drink, but if I just get water, i'm gonna cramp up like ummm.. something that cramps a lot.... I can bring powder, but 100miles worth of powder is a lot....

Even though it's a supported ride, should I still bring my spare tube/multitool/tirelevers/fiberfix spoke etc?

All this stuff is nice to have around, but it'd also be nice to lose a pound or 3.

Should I bring an Energy bar? Should I bring a lot? There is food at each of 3 rest stops I believe.

I'll probably just bring everything I think i may need, and leave the superfluous stuff in the car, but it's fun to ask here too....

I'm doing the Marin double, which shares the century's course. Here are some quick answers for ya:

1) They'll have Gatorade for sure. Since one of the sponsors is Hammer Nutrition, they may also have electrolyte powder mix (HEED) or eletrolyte pills (Endurolytes).

2) Yes, bring your tubes and tools!

3) Bring an energy bar for extra snacking, but you'll have plenty to eat the the rest stops.

Have a great time!

I would say pack light when it comes to snacks and drinks and use the rest stops when you need to. I just rode my first century last weekend and I have to say that I way overestimated the amount of food and liquids that I'd need. My original plan was to stop at each of the 5 rest stops to drink and eat, but I ended up stopping only at one. I had four energy bars along and only ate two of them. Granted, I hydrated so much during the couple of days before the event that I spent more time peeing that I would have preferred!

And yes, bring tools! If you flat, there will be about a million people that will offer help, but you should be prepared to fix yer own or help someone else.

Good luck with the ride!

Post a ride report.

My first attempt is coming the 27th and I'd like to read about your experience.
