Performance double points weekend....a joke

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Performance double points weekend....a joke

Why is double points weekend a big deal.

When they have 10% off coupons it is the same thing except there are 10% more dollars remaining in the wallet. Now if they only had double points with 10% coupon then that would be something to shout about. But alas no such luck this time.

I miss the 20% off coupon codes. Those cheezy bastards. I'm not renewing my membership.

I've got to say a lot of stuff going on at Performance is a joke, and as a customer, I am not laughing

They treat you like crap -- but only AFTER you purchase a bike. The salespersons toiling there are paid in part on comissions so they always steer you to the most expensive thing out there.... The managers basically don't want to make wave, and get a part of the gross of their stores, so they just see the numbers and customer satisfaction be damned...

I don't blame the salespersons for this, I blame the corporate geniuses for structuring their stores that way. But after all what do you expect when you consider that their products are built by underpaid tawainese factory workers... Of course Performance managment will try to short change their employees and ultimately their customers...

Wow, sounds like they've really burned you - sorry to hear that. We've got two Performance stores locally and I have had great experiences with both and have always received good service, especially with returns. Two months ago I took a co-worker who was looking to get into cycling to Performance and the salesperson completely understood her budget and presented bikes that met her needs. The one she wanted to test ride was boxed in the back and he arranged to have it built up for her to ride on a day he wouldn't be there, wouldn't take her name or let her make reference to his - obviously giving up his commission. The reference to Taiwanese factory workers is said in way that suggests that Performance made that happen or otherwise have some choice in not selling bikes/parts from there. Over the years I have been in business for myself and have worked for others as well, and have never been exposed to a business strategy based on shortchanging customers - any such business would close their doors in short order. Again, it's clear you've had problems and that's too bad, but Performance serves a purpose and I have received good prices and good service over the years and I hope things change for the better in your case.

Prices at Performance seem to be much higher this year than a couple of years ago, and that's not even counting the 20% coupons. I'm giving up on them, too.

Yea.. those Sidi Mega shoes I just bought $30.00 cheaper than anywhere else in town (Plus no one had them in stock, they were special order only) must be knockoffs or something... I loves me some Performance Bike.

The NLBS (Not Local Bike Shop) I deal with only sells Shimano so I don't feel bad about buying the shoes at Performance.

I think Performance is great.. I hope they b!tchslap all the other LBS into having to pull their act together in order to keep their clientel and win new ones.

Maybe you can educate me.. where is a cheaper source than Performance? Everything Ive bought at Performance has been TREMENDOUSLY cheaper than all the LBS's and about on par with the mail order places. If there is somewhere else I can deal with that's cheaper than Performance, hook a brutha up!

I gave up on Performance last spring (mostly due to the shipping). Nashbar has been getting my mail order business since then.

I’m going to performance 2 day to pay for my 06 scat……oh and regarding the most expensive bike thing…..you can fix that by starting your convo like this…. “I want to spend x amount on a bike….what do u have in this price range?” Or at least that’s what I did. And the managers where all very nice to me when I asked about financing ect… I always just ask the guy working on bikes what he thinks I should get….I figure he’s not a salesman or at least he isn’t one on that day and he must work with all these bikes all the time. So he knows what he’s talking about. Or at least I hope lol
Well ill let u guys know how it goes.
Peace

I have not had a real bad experience with them. I guess it works for some folks and not for others. I will continue to shop there until they piss me off!

Performance's prices are Mt. Everest high compared to where they used to be in the market place. I ordered a batch of about 10 things a couple of months ago and took the time to look through every online source I knew to price. The result? Cambria bike got my order. They were a little higher on 2 items, until I sent them the links to the item on the web for cheaper and I got their price smasher codes.

I've never made an online purchase from Performance as I can usually find what I am looking for in-store, or I'll just order from Nashbar. It's stuff like helmets, some clothing, tubes, glasses, etc. that I go to Performance for and their prices for those items (when on sale) are good enough for this penny pincher.

I didn't know that. Either way, I get my stuff faster when I order it from Nashbar. I also bought a Bell Alchera helmet from Nashbar last week for 10 bucks cheaper than Performance wanted.

they don't work on comission at any performance. no sales person there can pad their check by selling you a more expensive bike. Cheers.

+1 - I totally missed that comment before, but if these guys are on comission they must not understand how it works, or they are the worst comission sales people I have ever met. Odds are if they're telling you about a more expensive model it is because you are giving them cues that you're interesed in it, but don't feel comfortable asking.

You are wrong.
I know a fellow who works in product development at the corporate office at Performance here in Chapel Hill. I also discussed the matter with the co-manager at at the local Performance store. They both confirm that sales people get a comission on the sale of a bike.

Cheers right back at ya'

I, too, purposely let my membership lapse. They seem to jack up their prices to compensate for any sales and I really dislike that I have to use my discount on my next purchase. My fault, I didn't read the fine print. I've also had the shipping 'discount' problem. No thanks Performance. Keep your Team Membership scam. I'm taking my business elsewhere.

FWIW, I have had excellent experiences with CBO, Nashbar and Speedgoat.

Worst service ever.

They sucker you in with promises of free adjustments for life, but then try and scam you out of it.

I went in there to get my derailleurs and BB adjusted, and they told me I would have to leave my bike there for 2 WEEKS!!

I will never buy another thing from them.

If you shop around, you can usually do better than Perf, price-wise. I happen to have one local to me, so if I need something quick and the LBS doesn't have it, it's a good "fall back on" shop. The people seem nice, but there seems to be high staff turnover, so you don't always get the same person to talk to the next time you visit.

Correct about the commission thing, its 5% of any bike over $500 IF the store makes their monthly sales. That said, it really depends on the store. I’ve never seen any of us really pressure someone to spend outside their budget. Nor do I notice anyone really hung up on commissions either, and this is coming from a frequent shopper before I started working their, and now as an employee.

The free adjustments are derailleurs, brakes, and wheel truing. Bearings aren’t covered under the free adjustment thing. Even if they were, its called a repair schedule, do you expect them to drop everyone in front of you and give you preferential treatment?

10% off coupons are not the same thing, the performance points are calculated based on the total after the discounts. Lets say you buy a $1000 bike. You apply 10% off and get 10% back. You get 10% of $900 which is $90 for a total "savings" of $190. If you get 20% of the $1000 back you have a total "savings" of $200 which is a better deal assuming you have $200 in other things you'd like to buy.

Edit: I'm not saying the company is perfect or great even, I've had my own share of incredibly annoying problems with them as well but at least recognize the fact that the individual stores, catalog, and website all have their quirks and these broad generalizations are ridiculous.

Good points. I've been buying from Performance for over 20 years. I will continue to buy certain items from them. Their prices are less competative than they have ever been, either that or everyone else has figured out how to compete with them.

In the Seattle area, there aren't that many bicycle stores that have a decent range of accessories, parts or tools, other than the local Performance stores and the Greggs Cycles at Green Lake. I go to the U-District and Redmond Performance stores as well as shopping the website. I can usually do better price-wise shopping at Performance. Oddly enough, Seattle and the surrounding area has a lot fewer bicycle shops than other metropolitan areas of the same size.

Because of the hills and the rain, cycling is not as popular here as it is in drier and flatter areas of the country. When I go to Chicago, Phoenix, Dallas/Fort Worth or Los Angeles for business meetings or conventions, I am struck at the far greater numbers of bicycle shops in those areas, even controlling for the greater population.
