Bontrager Race Wheelsets, Not good?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bontrager Race Wheelsets, Not good?

Hello,
I have just bought my New Trek 1000.
I have heard from many users from here that the stock wheels are crap, so I spent $125 and upgraded my stock wheels to Bontrager Race wheelsets.
But the thing is, I've been looking for the reviews on Bontrager Race sets and they have a horrible reviews on it... Is this mean it's not worth spending $125 extra for these wheels?
My LBS wanted few days to get all my gears replaced and such (I've already bought SPD-R540, clipless pedals, Aerobars, speedometer) so should I call them back and say to them not to replace the wheels?
What do you guys think?

See how much they'd charge for an Open Pro/Ultegra or Open Pro/105 handbuilt wheelset. If it's in the ballpark, go w/ that instead.

I upgraded my 1200 with a set of Bontrager Race Lite wheels. They have been a great set of wheels.

I just bought a set of these for my Ciocc from Nashbar. $249 on sale.

I have had good success with Bontrager wheels. I have heard good things about these Cane Creeks too.
Bontrager will back you up if you have any problems. Good luck!

The high-end Bontrager wheels are really nice, but I don't have much experience with the Bontrager Race wheels. Keep in mind that a lot of people will dis them just because they're Bontrager/Trek.

I wouldn't spend the extra $125 for the Race Lites. A buddy of mine let me borrow his Trek 5200 for a couple weeks and it had the Race Lites on it. I didn't like them. I put a few miles on them and put on my Velomax Tempests instead. The Race Lites just looked and felt like cheap wheels.

I up graded the races on my Lemond to Race Lites and they are a really great wheelset. There is a substantial leap in quality between the two wheelsets. Do it while you can get a credit for the original races.

My first bike, a Lemond Alpe d'Huez had Bontrager Select wheels, they were adequate for training.

I have never ridden on the Race wheels, but guess that they're pretty similar.

I currently ride on Race Lites and I love them. I have about 8,000 miles on them and they're still true. They are definitely good enough for racing in Cat 5 & Cat 4.

Here are the retail prices & weights from the Bontrager website:

Select: 1890g - $199
Race: 1830g - $300
Race Lite: 1690g - $400

I would not pay $125 to upgrade from Select to Race (there isn't much difference), but would pay $200 to upgrade to Race Lites.

I have Race Lites on my Lemond. Very tough wheels and I'm a clydesdale.

Yep, you may be spending a lot on the Trek, but wheels are a good spot to upgrade. I have Race Lites on my Lemond and love'em.

The 1000 does not come stock with Selects. It comes with some Alex wheels. The Selects are fine wheels for most people. The Race wheels should be even better. The listed retail on the Race wheels is $299.00. I think that it is a fine price for a several level upgrade.
