Beating Humidty on the Sunday morning group ride

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Beating Humidty on the Sunday morning group ride

It was a blistering hot day here. Now, when I say hot in Japan, it's really only 35*C. Right now we're weighing in at 67% humidity, and when these pictures were taken the weather history shows 74% humidity. We had one guy get picked up and driven home due to dehydration today, and yesterday we had one go to the hospital and take 3 bags of IV fluids. (this was the aforementioned ironman triathlete, so you don't think it was some newbie that doesn't know hydration principals). Hydrate and cool people! Take two bottles whenever you can and never let both get empty!

So, today at 11:30am, we stopped the group ride and hopped in the river! I almost had to call my wife to come get me in the mountains. No desire to get back on the bike after having cooled down so much. Especially when we knew we had to climb the massive hill to get back to the other side of the mountain peaks.

I grew up in Japan but never got used to the humidity. That's one reason why I settled in LA....

On days like that locals just ride near the coast. 102 at 30 miles inland and 75 on the shore. Carfree? All buses have bike racks and bus 29 runs along the coast. Dip in the water . The water is straight from Alaska, you need a wet suit that makes you look like a seal, and we have shark attacks every year here.
