105 Crankset --worth it?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

105 Crankset --worth it?

I just saw some cranksets on sale at NAshbar...

I'd like to upgrade from my current crankset (RPM compact double: 53-39) and possibly my bottom bracket (FSA Platinum ISIS). Cost would be $ 84 bucks plus shipping without labor...

Question is, is this a good deal; a necessary deal. I was told that the 105 cranksets are great...and at that price a deal. Just wanted to run it by you guys

105 are very nice, but for ten bucks more that Ultegra they have is an even better deal.

Uhmmm
What makes the 105 a big deal, and for that matter the Ultegra a bigger one? Weight? Reliability? Strength?

OK to start with 53-39 is a standard double and not a compact double. What do you hope to acheive from a upgrade?

The FSA bottom bracket is of top quality but you would have to change it to use a Shimano crank because they're octalink.

Have the chainrings worn out on the RPM? When you consider the cost of replacing the chainrings then a new crank on special may be a good deal but I don't think your going to get a lot of bang for your buck so it depends on how tight your money situation is.

Regards, Anthony

I bought the Ultegra for my wife's bike, upgrading from a Sora. It was a better deal last week, with the 20% off 5 items + 20% coupon. Anyway saved over 1 lb from the Sora. Looks great and should be more then enough for her Cannondale. You only need a BB tool and crank puller, installing is straight forward. You can find details at www.parktool.com

Not a good deal.
Chucksbikes has it cheaper
Or even better, I recently bought a Ultegra 9spd double crankset (53/39) from Cambria Bike for $59.

Uhm... ....Not sure, just wanted to get better performance and better feel. All my equipement is new for now. So perhaps I should just wait...
