Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedals, pedals, and more pedals...

I've got two bikes, both of them have SPD-SL pedals. One of them has Ultegra, the other has the black 105 level pedals. The black 105 level pedals pop and creak like dammit, and walking on them is shredding cleats like dammit.

So I'm thinking about moving over to Look or Look compatible pedals, in the hopes some of the lesser expensive Look compatibles don't pop and creak, and there are cleat covers available for Look compatible cleats. I do not, however, want to spend all sorts of money.

Now check my logic here; theoretically, I could get some nice Look pedals for my roadie, and some Nashbar Look compatibles for my fixie, yes? And the cleats would be compatible so I'd only need one pair of shoes, yes? Do you have to get authentic Look pedals and cleats to get the cool cleat covers?

Finally, I like the SPD-SLs because they've got some decent side-to-side float. Do the Look and Look compatible pedals have float? Or no?

Thanks, all!

There are cleat covers for SPD-SL's I believe. I could be wrong however.

I don't know anything about Look pedals, but you can most certainly get cleat covers for SPD-SL style cleats. See here. I use them pretty religiously, and I don't have cleat wear issues. Then you'd just have to replace your 105 pedals with the Ultegra version.

Well there you go! Your cleat troubles are solved.

Yes, Look cleats can float. I use Keo Carbon pedals and I can get 0*, 4.5*, and 9* float cleats for them. I use the 4.5 degree float and find it works fine.
