Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

toes going numb?

hi all,

sometimes when i ride my toes on both feet start to feel tingly and get numb. it almost feels like they are falling asleep-- as if the blood flow were cut off. it comes and goes, and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. any else experience this? any ideas? btw, i dont have any injuries (that i know of) and i'm in pretty good shape (been racing road and cx for 3 yrs). thanks...

Pay attention to the angle of your feet when you pedal, for me if I get lazy my toes start to point down the force of my stroke forces my toes deep into my shoes and i get numbness. If I keep my feet parallel to the ground I don't have the problem.

Try upgrading your insoles or moving your cleat position. The superfeet I put in my cycling shoes did the job. At first it didn't go away so I don't know if it takes time for your feet to adjust to the new platform.

+1

I had a bike fitting as well as custom insoles made at the same time, and it made a huge difference.

Shoes just too tight? and are they the correct size? Agree with the insole comments for comfort but I do not think that will solve numbness in your toes.

I had the same problem until I switched to wider shoes (Sidi Mega). But first try to loosen the front strap/buckle of your current shoes.
Remember that feet tend to swell during long rides so the strap could be fine at the beginning of the ride but too tight after an hour. So loosen it while riding. Sock quality can also make a difference, avoid the all coton ones. Wiggling your toes once in a while during the ride also helps improving blood flow.

+1 Exactly what happens to me. Once I realize this, it goes away after a few minutes when I keep my feet parallel.

If I lace my shoes to tight, the lace pressure with the pressure of riding will numb the balls of my feet fairly rapidly. When I loosen the laces, the problem disappears.

Cushions that are too thick can cause this problem, too - consider a stiff, but relatively thin cushion.

I'm having the same problem, I think it might be that the socks are too thick... going to try a lighter weight sock and see if it helps.
