Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Cycling Website

Hey everyone, I just started putting together a new website for road cycling enthusiasts at roadcycler.com. I don't mean to spam, but I just want to get anyone's opinion, and I need suggestions for content that should be added. I welcome your comments/criticism.

Nice looking site! I'm in Northern Minnesota and do quite a bit of riding in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Welcome!

I actually have a cabin in Pillager, MN, right by Brainerd on Sylvan Lake. I have done the Paul Bunyan Trail a few times but just about fell asleep doing it every time. It is almost too straight and flat!

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone.

Nice job. Very clean looking. I like the layout. Good content.

I look for frequent posting in a website. That is what I'm trying to do with my own blog (link below). I'm also trying to determine what people want to read about. I will be experimenting with what interests me and see how that goes.

I am not sure quantity is more important than quality. I prefer to post a few quality articles a day. I do think it is important to post daily, otherwise people lose interest.

Nice site. Definitely quality over quantity... but if you can update with quality posts everyday, then it's all good!

Yep, old railroad bed, flat and straight. Try out the last 8 miles up by Walker. It's like a roller coaster.
We have friends on Sylvan, Timber Ridge Rd.

As others have suggested, the trick is to keep interesting stuff on the site. My one concern would be that using blogging software as the backbone of the site inherently organizes the information chronologically. Right now, there aren't very many articles in there, but I think it will make navigation hard once there is a lot of content.

Yeah, I totally agree that this is one of the biggest problems with blogging software. The good articles get lost with time. Once the articles start adding up, I plan on revamping the category system. There are a few solutions that help draw attention to older articles, such as asides and featured articles.

Nice site. If you're concerned about organization using blogging software, have you thought of using a web content management system for the site? I've used one before for sites wouldn't really fit the "blog" style but still wanted an easy way to manage content.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_management_system

Also, I have to second your praises of the Cliff Nectar bars. I got a free sample and those things are godly! They taste even better than than the normal Cliff bars.

Sort of reminds me of Gizmodo, except for cycling. I think having concise posts with links for more info is a great format. Catch my interest. Tell me something interesting or something I don't know. Let me know if there's more info out there. You may eventually want to have a few articles on the front page (like Gizmodo) once you have enough, but I'm not sure that's better than what you've done.

I think in short order, you will convince me to finally cancel the subscription to Bicycling, since you already have more info on your site than they provide me in a year.

Great job! Look forward to more.

Well, I use a program called Wordpress and it is similar to the way a wiki works. It is a great system for managing my articles, and is very customizable.

Wow, that is one heck of a compliment. I actually canceled my Bicycling subscription because I got sick of the magazine recycling articles from Men's Health (they are both owned by Rodale publishing).

Not to highjack the thread, but I'd like to present my site for your reviews as well. It is called https://www.bikeworldnews.com and I try to cover pro racing, products and technology, bike culture and more.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've been doing the site for a little over a year now, and am finally starting to generate some traffic.

I should also add that I am looking for contributors. I'm really into the road racing scene, but have less time to devote to mountain biking, cyclocross, fitness and the like. If you are writing about these subjects on a regular basis, I'd love to take a look at your work and possibly include it in the site. I can be reached at ronatbikeworldnewsdotcom

Thanks!
