Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Clydesdales on Carbon!

I have started using these boards about a month ago. I have received some great advice, and appreciate.

One thing that is moronic is all the people who tell Clydesdales that they shouldnt bother with a Carbon bike. That they should just lose weight, etc.

Well, I am a Clydesdale, (although steadily moving out of that category!) and on Saturday I finally bought a new bike, a Madone 5.2 . I rode the Madone, the Roubaix, and the Giant TCR 1. What I liked about CARBON was that it didnt have the teeth-rattling rigidity that my Trek 1200 (owned for 18 years) used to provide. The ride is much better, in my opinion.

As for weight.......I had my old bike in the shop when I bought the new one. We put them both on the scale, and the Madone was about 2.8 lbs lighter. Now, couldnt I just lose 2.8 pounds? Sure, but that is irrelevent. The fact is, that on any given day, riding the new bike makes my overall weight about 3 pounds lighter than it would be on the old. That is true whether I am a Clyde at 225, or if I am down to 185.

So, should a Clydesdale buy a carbon bike? You bet! If that is what he finds to fit him best. The ride quality is awesome, and he will always be lighter on race day, or any other ride!

You have my admiration, not2fast. You'll probably enjoy that carbon bike without incident for the next 50 years. Me, I'm too chicken to park my balloon-butt on a set of carbon toothpick tubes. I'm "bicycle-part-failure-averse." Happy pedaling, and congratulations on a nice bike!

not2fast... I guess we all make our own choices in the end. I only rode a carbon bike (or two). I settles onthe Cannondale six13. I felt to much life was sucked out througha full carbon frame. It did ride nice.. Ii may have even bought it if Trek would have allowed me to go with a custom paint job.
enjoy the new ride.

I've read the lifetime warranty that came with my carbon trek, no where does it make mention of a weight limit. Actually, most trek dealers I talk to speak of the fact that trek has no weight limits on their bikes or their bontrager components. So I'm wondering, if you can link me or show me where it says anything about 175lbs?

I think you will find that, with the VERY rare exception, this elusive weight limit myth is just that.

Not the case for my Giant - I checked.

Congratulations on your purchase from one Clydesdale to another. I love it that you don't care about that ignorant comment that most people make about loosing weight. You lose it if you want. But if you wan't a carbon bike then no one should ever discourage you. Good job.

It is true, but, as you say, partially irrelevant. What matters is the fraction of total weight: 3/225 or 3/185. So if you were 185, that 3lb would be way more noticable (and thus way more cost effective).

Enjoy your new bike.

Congrats on the carbon! I weigh in at 220 and just upgraded from a Giant OCR2 to a OCR c2 and LOVE IT!!!! I've told several folks it's like moving from a Cutlass to an El Dorado! I rode several bikes including a Scattante Fierte and the Giant just sort of felt right.

As for those comments from folks about losing weight? I've lost 100 pounds in the past couple of years and it's pretty hard to make me feel bad about my size anymore.

Congrats on your new bike...even though you did not provide the mandatory porn I am a clyde who was 285-90 when I bought my full carbon giant, I could not agree more with our right to shave 2lbs if we want to, who needs it more than a clyde. I have shaved 50 from my body and would like to cut another 40and see where I am at. Enjoy the luxurious ride of carbon.

I believe you are referring to the Lincoln Continental! They have the spare tire trunk lid! You could order Cadillacs with "Continental Kits" which included the Spare Tire trunk lid, and a modified Grill. My Aunt had one!
