Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not true if you make it with skim (fat free) milk.

I've tried just about all of the energy drinks and nothing seems to work without making me quite nauseous except Gatorade Frost.

I've read the label and the stuff in Frost appears to be the same as in any other Gatorade but my reactions to Gatorade is quite striking with strong nausea and little recovery whereas Frost just seems to work OK without any added physical trauma.

Now Frost is getting difficult to find so I'm sticking more and more with gels and plain water which appears to have no bad side effects with me.

I don't race, so special drinks aren't needed for me.

Chocolate Milk is so far the best I have yet to discover. Super cheap by comparison, and tastes better than anything else. Yum, Yum delicious!!

B.
After a hardc workout I will often have some kind of recovery drink - sometimes a Cytomax product and sometimes a shake that has carbs and protein in it. I often find, particularly after very long workouts, that I benefit from taking something that will get in my bloodstream quickly. I then follow up with a meal 1-2 hours later. I generally don't do as well when I have a meal first.

I believe in more protein (and mixed proteins) than most. I have been using ProPeptide MBF: Protein: 42g, to aid in muscle repair, Carbohydrates: 84g, Low in simple sugars (including Lactose) and Fat: 5g.

Also, I tend to lose weight when I cycle a lot. So the 550 Calories helps me maintain my size.

I've been happy with Clif Shot Recovery, Natural Vanilla flavor, same people that make Clif Bars. Tastes good, carb/protein mix looks reasonable (5:1), substantially organic

Wow, what a cornucopia of brands!!!
I typically use what's around: Mostly water to which I add a little brown sugar and a tiny amount of salt. I'll sprinkle a little of the kid's Kool Aid to add flavor.
It dios the tricks on the rides and what I loose on image I more than make up in terms of savings.

What is your favorite recovery drink? .
I have a preference for cold beer. It quenches the thirst, hydrates me and even provides some calories. What could be better?

After a ride I tend to drink everything that "feels" right till I hit the "spot"

pretty much my normal routine

water
orange juice
milk/chocolate
other fruit juice -by this time I'm usually downing a pickle or spanish olives or tortilla chips etc
more water
and finally sit down with a grabbed fruit or a pbj or leftover pasta

One scoop of whey protein in a 20oz bike bottle of orange juice works well for me. Sometimes I cut the oj with water so it's a bit less sweet. I usually drink this immediately after finishing 80+ mile rides, then follow up with a meal in the next hour.
