Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am lucky enough to have access to high end washer/dryer and I've always washed my bike shorts/bibs w/ other dark colors, a reg. amount of detergent and in cold water/perm. press cycle and they do fine... I even throw them in the dryer and put the setting on a medium, perm. press cycle there as well and they always come out fine, the chamois is fine and they feel like new... They all aren't super high end bibs and shorts either...

I guess it's all about the type of washing and drying machines you're working with... .

If you use public laundromats I would recommend not drying there though, yeah...

Good idea. I actually had that happen once. The straps go so permanently stretched that I ended up relegating them to spinning class duty. Fortunately, they were relatively old to begin with an not an expensive pair.

After a ride that I have sweated, I take off my kit and place it in the laundry machine. It sits in the laundry machine until the next load. My wife will eventually dump other clothes on top of my kit and they all tumble merrily in the laundry machine. After the clothes are clean, my wife moves the laundry into the dryer and starts it. Once the laundry is dry, she folds and sorts the clothes. My kit gets shoved into my cycling drawer. I have 4 full kits so I usually don't run out. We have kids and do laundry often. If gear wears out I get new gear. I haven't noticed any negative affects to my chamois with this type of care.

I do the same with my Assos bib shorts after every ride, except I use the regular Costco Free and Clear non-perfumed, odorless detergent. I also use those mesh wash bags (chamois side out). Once every two months or so, I use Penguin Sport-Wash for all my athletic technical fabric clothing (gym and cycling) in a mild temperature wash, and always enclosed in wash bags. Hang dry everything always, no dryer for me.

Must be some sort of beginners luck with search.
I don't wish to stir up anything, but it seems that sometimes there is a mixed message in forums that confuses me. How many times do you see someone (maybe a newcomer) post a question about something and one of the replies will invariably make a comment that the OP needs to use search because that topic has been done to death. In the instance of the OP of this thread, it seems that they did indeed do that. Then there are comments about 'zombie threads' when it seems that instead of starting a new thread it would make sense to continue an old one if that is the topic for discussion.

Just curious. Hope nobody is offended.

I have a special relationship with my bike shorts. They support and pad me and in turn we shower together after most every ride. Once in a while, if I get behind, I have a couple of pairs in the shower at the same time and we do a group thing.

No offense here, but I'm sure somebody is. It's the nature of the interwebs.

The wisdom in what you just wrote goes beyond most intellectual capacities surfing the net every day.

I, for one, enjoy almost every new post I see. (new today or new-to-me)

Party on, Garth!!!......

Wash, air dry, ride. It's not rocket science. FWI: Have at least two pair and rotate.
Cheers

Don't apologize for digging up an old thread. If you started a new thread on this topic you would have had multiple posts telling you to use the search function. That's just how it is in th 41.

I machine wash in a front loader with cold water and active enzyme cleaner made for athletic clothes (no regular detergent) after every ride (I have several pairs of bibs and shorts). Then I hang them to dry in the bathroom. They dry so quickly that there is really no reason to ever throw them in the dryer. I used to machine dry my bike clothes, but it wears them out faster and is a waste of energy. They dry in a couple of hours on their own.
