Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Kudos to Performance

I know all the LBS supporters like to hate on Performance but sometimes Performance actually comes through. I went in today to pick up some random stuff, mainly gels, Accelerade, etc but before I left the house, I printed out a copy of ProBikeKit's price on the Look KEO Carbon pedals just to see if Performance would match it. Performance's price on those pedals is a whopping $100.00 more than ProBikeKit.

I went in and asked the guy working there if they had any in stock. They told me they had 1 set left and they were on sale for "only" $199.00. Little did they know....... I asked him if they would price match and he asked me with who and I said "ProBikeKit.Com.. your website says you will price match other websites" so he sends me up to the front to talk to the manager. At this point, I haven't mentioned the price or pulled out the print out of PBK's webpage.

Get up front, ask the manager the same thing. "Sure, we'll price match it." Pull out the paper and hand it to the guy and I thought he was going to have to scrape his jaw off the floor. He said something about having to make sure they were the same pedals and headed off to the back. A few minutes later I see him and the other manager back there looking at the printout and about 10 minutes later he comes back and says "Well, you really got one over on us with this one.. it's way below our cost but we'll match it."

I grabbed a spare set of cleats and covers and paid for it all before they could change their minds. Granted they could have told me to take a flying leap and I wouldn't have been upset with them.. I really didn't expect them to match the price.. I doubt any other shop would have.

I was down in Cary a couple of weeks ago and stumbled on the Performance there. Nice store, clean, well lit, well stocked. If our store here in Manassas had looked that good they might not have closed.

That store in Manassas was in a crappy location too...too hard to get to with all the traffic on the main road.

No, they don't but their price matching policy doesn't say they have to have a retail outlet either.

Please include the item, the price and where you saw the price, including URL if it is a Web site, or the edition of Magazines or Catalogs.
Now what I DO think would stop them from matching it is that ProBikeKit isn't located in the US. Thinking about it, I guess that wasn't clear when I took in the printout of the ad page. However, it again doesn't state on their website that the company has to be located in the US. I did get this email this morning from Performance.

We will price match with any nationally advertised company within the United States who is offering the same product for a lower price. Please submit all information on the price match with your order.

If there is a nationally advertised price that is currently available on the same item you want from our catalog, this becomes your new Performance price. Note that we will gladly match prices on our
competitors' close-outs and sale items as long as the products are the same. This includes model, year, size, and color. The competitor must have the item available and still be honoring the prices. If you are
shopping by telephone, just tell the operator where the special is printed. If you are ordering by mail, send a copy of the ad with your order. If you are shopping at one of our retail stores, bring in the ad
with you. If you are purchasing online, simply give us the price match information in the notes section when you are checking out. Please include the item, the price and where you saw the price, including URL
if it is a web site, or the edition of Magazines or Catalogs. Each price is subject to verification. Price matching online may delay processing and shipment of your order. Price matches cannot be combined
with coupons.

So this truly might have been a one shot deal and maybe I did get something over on them based on the girl's reply I got this morning.

Worst thing that ever happened to me was them opening that store. Before Performance was an hour drive so I didn't go in there much. Now I'm in there all the time. My inventory of biking goods keeps going up because their prices are so damn cheap.

When I was walking out the door yesterday with all the crap I bought, the manager called out to me "See you tomorrow!!"

I do that all the time at Performance. They match website prices for me at 2 different Performance shops.
Last price match was from Biketiresdirect, they matched no problem. I do not ask them to match and then aks to use the web coupon for 10% off though. That seems asking a little much.

LOL.. yea.. I actually considered trying to get them to match the price and use the 20% off coupon but then I started thinking about looking a gift horse in the mouth and decided against it.

Plus, Performance has so much apparel, it pretty much rules mom and pop LBS's. Even the most high end LBS's here have maybe 2 racks of clothes.. Performance has half a store full. The 10% back thing is just gravy.. I went in a couple of weeks ago to get an Ultegra cassette. It was on sale for $59.00 and I had a $20.00 off coupon. I get to the counter with it and the cashier said "You have more than enough points to cover this", puts it in a bag and sends me out the door so I ended up with an Ultegra cassette valued at $39.00 for "free."

It's really going to be interesting to see how the LBS's local to the new Performance handle things. The new Performance is a lot nicer than the one in Carrboro and has way more stock. It's in a "high end" town along with 3-4 more LBS's that have been charging premium prices for stuff since the day they opened the door.

Ha, I didn't know that. The sign on our registers say it has to have a retail location but we usally honor whatever. I'll give that a try

I didnt realize it but the CSR pretty much cut and pasted Performance's price matching policy. Here it is from their website.

Performance Price Protection Plan: If there is a nationally advertised price that is currently available on the same item you want from our catalog, this becomes your new Performance price. Note that we will gladly match prices on our competitors' close-outs and sale items as long as the products are the same model year and are still available, and they are still honoring the prices. If you are shopping by telephone, just tell the operator where the special is printed. If you are ordering by mail, send a copy of the ad with your order. If you are shopping at one of our retail stores, bring in the ad with you. If you are purchasing OnLine, simply give us the Price Match information in the Notes section when you are checking out. Please include the item, the price and where you saw the price, including URL if it is a Web site, or the edition of Magazines or Catalogs. Each price is subject to verification. Price Matching Online will delay processing and shipment of your order.
