Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Centuries in the NYC metro area?

I have a brother who lives in NYC and is interesting in doing a century ride
sometime soon. He was planning to do one in october that, I think, is right
in the city. However, his work schedule will prevent him from going. Is
there anything else within the next 1-2 months that is within a reasonable
driving distance from manhattan, or perhaps in one of the boroughs or maybe
in NJ just across the bridge?

Yes, that's a good link for ya.

I hear the Tour de Bronx is a good ride, and should be coming up soon. I'm going to try to do it this year.

Tons of rides in the fall . . . tons.

The Ramapo Rally is this Sunday. I've never ridden but I will be giving it a go with some friends. The TA NYC Century on September 10th is lots of fun, though not what I would call a typical century with lots of open road; the whole thing takes place within the city, so there's lots of starting and stopping. However, I've ridden it what, three times now? and I'm on to ride it again, I enjoy it so much (I <3 NY, what can I say?).

The NYC Century is really fun and there is not alot climbing. It can be very social.

The Tour De Bronx is not a century, it is around 50-60 miles, but it is fun.

NYCC has the Escape NY Century, I think in October or maybe late September. Check on nycc.org. This one takes you out of the city into NJ and I think Rockland. I tried doing it 2 years ago, but the remnants of hurricane Ivan came through that day. I've never been on a bike in rain as hard as that and didn't make it to the GWB from Riverside & 122nd where we started. A big bolt of lightning also came down approximately where the start line was.

The NYCentury is laid out all through four of the five boroughs. Doing 100 miles of laps around Central Park would be mind-numbing, I think.

There is an invitational century that goes around Prospect Park in Brooklyn for 100 miles, though. That seems pretty draining as well...

30 or so laps of Prospect Park... OMG. PP is pretty and all but that's a lot of repetition!

somebody already mentioned the North Fork. I'm looking forward to that. (Mrs. Hambone is riding the short loop.)

I posted a map of the Montauk Century. From NYC to the end is 145 mi and he could take the train back. https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=203345
