Wheel hung bike storage dangerous?
I've always tried to stear clear away from wheel hung bike storage racks because it seems to me that there would be a lot of undue weight on the rim, especially if hung for a while, is this misplaced fear?

Totally misplaced fear. The way the wheel works is you are actually hanging from the top of the wheel when you ride (force down on the hubs pushes hub to ground and it hangs from the spokes on top). So the weight of just the bike hanging there vs the weight of you riding the bike is insignificant. The only danger here is if you don't get a strong enough hook or miss a stud and the bike falls.

the bike weighs approximtely 20 lbs, putting a static load of 20lbs on the wheel. rider plus bike weighs 200lbs give or take. Hitting a small bump at 20 mph, puts a load ofhundreds if not thousands of pounds of force on the wheel, and that happens over and over every ride with no problem whatsoever.

Is the hub very definitely hanging from the spokes above, rather than being supported by the spokes beneath? ...or, is it balanced equally (or unequally) between the two?

Think about it this way: take a spoke and push on it from the 2 ends, you can fold it pretty easily; take a spoke and pull on the two ends and try to tear it apart or even stretch it, and it can't be done. Thus the wheel has to be suspended from the top spokes, rather than propped up by the bottom spokes.
