Never Squirt Water While Descending!!!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Never Squirt Water While Descending!!!

So I was descending down along Highway 84 after a breathtaking (read: painful but beautiful scenery) climb up Old La Honda here in Nor Cal. As I meander down the smooth paved road, I felt dry in the mouth so I decided to squirt some water. I was probably descending at about 35MPH. Anyways, I missed my mouth and squirted right into my left eye. I was blinded for a few seconds, heard a blaring horns, and a few tire screetches. Next thing I know I was completey stopped but was standing right in the middle of a narrow road. Damn, that was a close call. But my left eye is still sore. Moral of my story: try not to squirt water while descending.

How does that have anything to do with going down a descent? You could have squirted in your eye just as bad going uphill.

And this is exactly why I suck rather than squirt.

always wear sunglasses or some sort of lenses...makes it that much harder to squirt yourself in the eye. If I didn't wear glasses of some sort my eyes would water so much from the wind on a 35MPH descent, I probably wouldn't be able to see anyway.

Becareful when and where you drink. We had a kid named Sushi Down here for a while, he worked at the LBS, and went to college. Hella good motor on this kid, as he would make all the splits except for the last one on our tuesday night race pace rides, with little training etc.

But he was a bit cocky, and was drinking one day in the paceline, not paying attention, and opened up some gaps. A couple of us suggested to him he drink in the recovery line, while drifting back, or sh*thook at the back and drink then etc...

He ignored us, pulled through again, drinking and looking over and back to make sure we all saw it etc.. Then proceeded to run off the side of the road. HAHHAAAA!

After you climb up OLH, which direction do you go to get to Alice's restaurant?
I'm also trying to figure out a nice little route through woodside and up along skyline that will
be fun but not too painful. I was thinking from robert's market in woodside out to the portola valley loop
for a warm-up, then up OLH, down to Alice's restaturant (wherever that is)...but not sure of a good way
to get back to the car in woodside. I don't like descending OLH, but wanted to find some other way back down with a fun descent where you can enjoy the ride. Any ideas?

You take a right to get to alices and the Skyline/Woodside(84) instersection. Then take a right on 84 and you'll end up on the road that goes right past Robert's. 84 is far better than OLH for descending as well, good pavement and nice turns all the way down.

Snick, check your PMs for answers.

samsation, yeah, doing anything other than paying attention to the road while descending 84 is probably not such a good idea. Glad you were not hurt!

I never understood why some people 'squirt' water in their mouth rather than suck it out of the bottle.

Afraid of a few germs?? Those bugs in your teeth have more germs!

Why not just do it like the TdF riders, bottle aimed down before squirting into mouth.

hehehe yeah, try to hang on for the A Ride and you won't have time (or energy!) to worry about squirting water on a descent or anywhere else but one of the very brief rests. The OP should definitely check out the more sensibly-paced B Ride before venturing out with the As. Send a PM to SteveE for more details or check out http://altovelo.org/calendar/index.htm
