Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey S PA and MD, Civil War Century...anyone doing it?

Ok so lets bring this one off the CBM thread. Is anyone here doing this ride or have you done it in the past?

How is the support?

https://www.baltobikeclub.org/index.pl/cwc

I might be able to make it down for this one too.

This hilly ride has about 7,400 feet of climbing with four mountain climbs, but if you get tired, you can bail out at 66 miles, skipping Gettysburg (and the last mountain climb) in favor of a scenic seven-mile descent back to the start/finish.
Sounds perfect for ya!

I've done this ride twice before will be there again this year. It's fairly hilly (about 7400 feet of climbing) and you'll definitely get a good workout. Very scenic, and for me, pretty challenging - my riding buddies all climb better than I do. I'm looking forward to it.

P.S. - It's a well supported ride with either 4 or 5 food stops on the century route.

I will be there, but I'm doing the 25mile route with my wife. After she heard my raving when I got home sunday (covered Bridge) she was so jealous she said she wanted to do this one. But since our son was born in April she hasn't really gotten any riding in, so we are just gonna do the short one together.

Plus I have the St. Michaels Century the next weekend. Didn't want to push it.

Jess has a friend coming in from out of town that weekend, so I'm afraid we'll have to miss it.

I plan to be there but the 7,400 ft, even with the bail out option, is a bit much for me.

So I'll be doing the meteric (I know that does not have too many hills).

Maybe I'll run into Mr & Mrs Cydewaze again (same gray Giant OCR2 with the gray and orange helmet).

And its very well supported (I have to say that I'm a BBC member).

Here's what I'm thinking:

Mr. Road doesn't ride out there with me YET. I've been pestering him to join me; no luck yet. But he's showing some interest, is fit and strong, and will get his road legs in no time.

Part 2 of my plan: our wedding anniversary is the 8th, the day before the ride. He's a history buff and would love this route. So how about for an anniversary present I get myself a new bike, adjust my 800 to fit him, and present the whole package to him as an anniversary surprise? Think it could work?

Ok, maybe the new bike for me part is a bit of a reach. . . but if I could come up with a loaner for him, this could work, possibly for the metric anyway.

Very well-supported ride, and you WILL be proud of yourself when you finish. Hardest day I've ever had in the saddle, but extremely satisfying. Unlike the Seagull, which I've actually finished in 5 hours, this one took 7. Granted, it was a few years ago and I wasn't in the same shape I'm in now, but you get the idea.

I won't be making it this year, but maybe next fall... we'll see.

Good luck to everyone riding!

Oh this plan sounds PERFECT to me. LOL I say go for it...you need a new bike and maybe this one wont have a disc wheel in the back

Speaking of wheels...man I took a digger tonight on a MTB ride...totally tacoed my front wheel...boy am I glad I have a left and I can't just get any old MTB wheel

Back back on topic...so how many want to do the metric?

Yyyup, I'm a weenie - dork disc on the back (but then again I'm working on a little chain rub on that big cog, and really don't fancy the chain flying into the spokes before the next adjustment), and guess what - I even have a mirror!

I'm a safety kinda gal

Really, I love my bike - it takes me places - and I know it's sounds and mechanics. And I'm not sure I ever want to give it up. So that means that maybe we'll have to buy TWO new bikes. Weeeeeeee!

I'm on for the full century, even though I will be bringing my tourer with the granny gear. Beth, would a loaner vintage bike work? I've got a couple that are roadworthy, but they might not be the right size (I suspect possibly a little small).

I'd love to, but 7400 feet of climbing is insane at my fitness level. Might consider doing one of the shorter rides. I'll make a decision next week.

Huh? Who me? Are you not remembering dragging my ass into the final rest stop and talking me out of saging in (thanks by the way). My 220 lbs doesn't climb anything fast.

But for real here I am thinking the metric route (don't want to hold anyone back on the full metric as it would be a long day for me). So if people are interested lets keep this thread alive...I think I can talk my wife into a trip to DC for the weekend (not that this is all that close to DC).

wow, looks like a terrific ride... this history nerd and cycling nut would be a pig in mud... have been to antietam (swear i saw ghosts there) and gettysburg, and would love to go back and see them on a bike.... will put it on my calendar for next year (am doing the local 'tour de paws' that day..)
