Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When Carbon Fibre Fails...

Not a bike, but simular application.

I am not really afraid of high end carbon fibre, but after a very small fall, I have my reservations.

This is an oboe, a buffet greenline, which is carbon fibre doped with grenilda wood for resonance (it costs about 5500.00). During rehersal a individual hit my case, which caused the oboe to fall about 6 inches flat... and at the weakest point the CF body failed, no crack, just straight catastropic failure. Grusome photos...

The instrument is on its way to one of the best greenline oboe repair person in the USA, where a new tenion will be added (about a 300 dollar repair)...

Just thought you would be interested...

Showing what can happen when even small impacts happen to CF... what CAN happen... but not what will happen...

For discussion.

Cf is for crack prevention, a major and common problem with wood professonal oboes, english horns, and clarinets... the sound is very simular to wood, but no issues with humidity and very little with temperature.

Hasn't this been discussed a bunch of times already in all the Steel vs Al vs Cf vs Ti threads?

apparently carbonites are wayyyyyy to serious to even fathom that it may be prone to breaking. ever.

Sorry to hear about your oboe. If that happened to my prized (although much less expensive) guitar, i'd throw a fit.

You're brighter than this, unless you're trolling.

And if you're not, go try riding your wood oboe down a hill at 50 MPH. At some point the design parameters and differences between a musical instrument and a bicycle component will become somewhat evident.

No no trolling, just trying to get into the exact discussion that you just brought up...

Of course musical instruments are not built to the same breakage tollerances as bike frames...

Ow ow ow!!! OUCH! It hurts to look at your poor, damaged baby. I tried one of those Greenlines when they were just coming out, IIRC, at an IDRS conference years ago. I was sufficiently impressed, but I'll stick to my rosewood Laubin, thanks. Hmmm, a rosewood bike, though... yikes! (like that bamboo bike posted here before)

If you could blow hard enough to cause damage, then I would call it a legitimate failure. Just like I would call it a legitimate failure, if you could pedal hard enough to snap a carbon frame in half.

Oboes weren't made to survive being dropped.

Just as bikes aren't made for surviving head-on collisions at 20mph.

P.S. Sorry to here about your oboe.

And Stradivarius violins aren't made to hold up roofs like laminate wood beams either. It's comparing apples and laptop computers, so let's talk about how those compare to carbon fiber bike frames when all three items are dropped off a bridge into the water.

CF is good enough for F1 to build most of the car out of and go 200 MPH at G forces that will pop your eyeballs. Ditto aluminum and CF in fighter jets and commercial aircraft. And it's used in body armor. Yet it's too risky or not good enough for people to use in a bike that gets ridden around at 15 MPH.

And it's all marketing. That's why some of the most expensive bikes out there are made of steel and ti.

Sheesh. You want to talk marketing? Getting people to drop $3k on something you could make in high school metal shop. That's marketing.

I was going to make some comment about the spelling of "Carbon Fibre", but if we're discussing it in the context of a $5500 Oboe I think "fibre" is more appropriate anyway...

Was it purchased at the Towne Oboe Shoppe?

I do find it amusing that people go nuts when I tell them I'm saving up for a $6000 bike when I think about musical instruments and, well, any other esoteric enthusiast item. The $6000 bike seems like a budget purchase...

Support your LOS! Don't buy Oboes online.

If it was fibre, you could send it to Calfee to fix... maybe out of bamboo or something.
