switching old components to a new lemond frame

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

switching old components to a new lemond frame

out of excitement for finding such a nice frame for so cheap (lemond buenos aires for 350), i bought it instantly. the only bike i have is an old univega road bike with downtube shifters, and i want to switch over the components to the new frame. i was comparing the two frames and the lemond doesn't have any thing in the position that my old bike has shifters on. will it only use handle shifters? if so, i'm going to drive to our recyclry and get some used handle shifters

What year is the BA? Is it all steel or a combo of steel and carbon? Does the frame not have braze-ons for downtube shifters?

What year is the Univega? If it's 7 speed or less, you'll probably need to compress the rear spread from the 130 it is now to either 128 or 126.

Sounds like a fun project. Give us some more details and we'll offer up all sorts of "advice".

Yes, what year is the BA? It seems a bit odd to put old parts on a newer frame but what the heck. Can you take some pictures of your new frame and your old bike?

the year is 2000. i'm not sure if it's all steel or steel/carbon. i'm very much of a newbie, and i'm not sure what braze ons are, but it has two little devices that obviously serve some purpose, located on the sides, upward on the downtube. i was comparing this to where my downtube shifters on the univega, and those are located in the middle of the downtube (as opposed to those metal things on the sides of the ba).

i'm not sure what year the univega is, but it is a red viva sport (if that helps at all). and it is a 6 speed

Your BA is steel and those 2 thingys are braze-ons for downtube shifters. It should all work.

since the recyclry actually has a ton of used parts, i'm actually thinking of buying new (used) components and going the hand shift lever route. i wasn't going to because i'm an incredibly broke kid that is slowly trying to build an awesome bike. i'm going to figure it all out today

Maybe this guy should have put the bar wrap over his brake cables too.

If it is six speed, it probably means the spacing in the rear is 126mm, and chances are the new Lemond is 130 if it is a 2000. 126 spacing was meant to accept 5-7 rear cogs on the cassette I believe. 130 accepts 8-10. You might hit a couple issues, though if the Lemond is made of steel, it could be cold set to 126mm so the rear hub fits. If not, you might need a different rear hub.

Issue number 2, finding the brifters (brake shifter combination) that work with 6 speed cassettes. The best place to get good info on this though is in the Bicycle Mechanics forum. They could definitely help you out a lot with this. They helped me a lot with my current build, though its going the other direction, with an old frame and soon to be new components. I saw bring the thread over there and see if they can be a bit mroe helpful than my limited knowledge.

I too am a broke college student and my best advice is not to rush it and make sure you do everything correctly. I've had my late 70's Sachs frame for over a year now, and just determining what to do with it took over a month. (The good thing coming of the waiting is the money Iam able to save in the meantime)

Best of luck with the build, and take pics when you are done, I'd like to see the end result.
