Good car for a cyclist?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a full size Mitz Montero and with 1/3 of the back seat folded up my bike rolls in and rolls out. It has been a great SUV.

PT Cruiser. Decent (not great) gas mileage and performance with a manual. Reliable, comfortable and incredibly good for hauling bikes and gear. Remove one side of the rear seat and haul bikes inside.

i have an '03 focus hatchback. it gets 27mpg average, and i've put my bike in quite a few times, without taking off the front wheel. Not a bad little car.

You suck. If I had known you had a 95 hatch for sale, I would have bought it from ya.

Definetely, they're both cheap, great on gas, easy on the eyes and are pretty common in case you want to run from the cops. Not to mention that they're the same exact cars with different bodywork and badges. "My" '98 Focus wagon came stock with a roof rack and drives well with 40,000 miles. I can't wait to finish my 2002 and put a roof rack on it.

Honda Fit. I can fit three bikes in the back with front wheel off.

$13,850 MSRP, multiple seat configurations, 38mpg highway.

I have a Civic with a Yakima rack on it (came with the car, woot!)

Someone suggested an FJ Cruiser. I ask that you don't consider this choice as my eyes can't take the hideous block of truck it is. I already see way too many of them on the roads and I want to kick the "designer" in the balls.

CRG Kali (125 model) with a tag leopard. That take care of the go-kart like experience

Corvette, fits one bike in the back, just take off the front wheel, gets 20-25mpg to boot. Unless you have heavy boots... then it can, ahh dip a bit due the interrelationship between acceleration and fun.

Civic, functional.

Honda element looks weird, but IMO is probably the best multipurpose low cost vehicle. Or if you really like working on vehicles and torturing yourself, go get a mid 90s land rover disco. Fits a bike or two with only slight contortionist tricks, gets terrible gas mileage, and requires constant maintenance, but it will get you wherever you need to go in whichever weather happens to be happening on whatever surface (or lack thereof) there might be.

I paid under 7k for mine.

I recently purchased a Nissan Murano for a spare car (mainly for cycling). I do not like bike racks and didn't like taking my bike apart to put it into the trunk of my sedan. The Murano is great for putting the bike into the back in one piece, along with the other equipment, without being too big and unwieldy to drive. There are plenty of other reasons why I like the Murano, too. Highly recommended.

Here's a couple pics of my bikes in my Tacoma. Mine's a loaded TRD 4x4 model. If you're on a budget you can get an economical pickup much cheaper than a car or SUV. Toyota, for example, has 4-cyl trucks that get 25-30 mpg I believe, and base models are around $15,000 MSRP but actaully sell around dealer invoice, prob. around $12,000.

We love our Mazda Protege 5... came with a roof rack which was somewhat easy to get bike racks for or you can easily throw two bikes inside. You might be able to find some under $10k.

Mazda has replaced that model with the Mazda 3 hatchback.... also not a bad car.

+1
I kept a fourth-hand sedan deville long after it should have been euthanized as an extra car because I could just throw the bike in the back seat

Where do you put the bikes with a Toyota Matrix? Roof rack? Trailer hitch rack? Inside?

When I bought my mountain bike I put the bike in (whole) and it fit, but the fit was pretty tight. I guess it would have been a lot easier if I had removed the front wheel.

Did you install a fork mount in the MDX? I've been putting my bike inside without a mount, but I'm thinking of getting a fork mount that works with the factory roof rack. (eg: Rocky Mounts or Inno)
