How long before you buy a new bike?
I'm always looking for the next best bike that I want to buy, but I haven't seriously entertained the idea of a new bike due to the $$$ aspect. But it got me thinking...how long do most you go before you buy a new bike?

I'm at ~5000k right now but i wouldn't be suprised if trade my synapse in for a systemsix over the winter, provided what kind of tax return i get in march. In other words a new bike every year or two (5000 - 10000 miles (8000 - 16000 km) )

about 10 years for a new road bike, and I'm due. (Unless you count last year's new TT bike, this year's track bike, and a new group for my current road bike, all of which of course I don't count, but my wife does.)

i don't go by miles, i go by years and bank balance.
13 years passed before i opted to get a new bike at the beginning of the year. the older bike had a years worth of racing & training, then lay dormant for +/- 8 years. then, after picking up cycling again, i rode it for 3 years (winter/spring/summer/fall) before deciding that i was serious about cycling again.
if i continue riding like i have, then maybe i'll get a new one in a few years, or not. i'm half thinking of picking up some aluminum/105 bike for a winter/bad weather bike. we'll see.

All you need to do on most bikes is replace worn out parts. My steel frame 1952 Schwinn is fine.
Some of my old bikes may have 10,000 miles on the frame, but the parts just get replaced. My steel Touring bike has 8,500 miles on the original RSX parts including the chain and cogs.
But that does not keep me from getting a new bike of a different type.

What does mileage have to do with buying another bike? I usually have one or two in the works, all the time.
It's all about how free you are with your play money.
Perhaps you meant how long before you replace your existing bike?

My old bike is currently in the shop getting a used/new-to-me components upgrade (sora to DA). That should keep me happy for a while.

You don't have a choice for "When the wife allows". I am working on her right now but it doen't look good. I am still getting what's wrong with the bike you have. So I'll say another 7,500 - 10,000 miles.....

i'm into the recycling thing. ride it till something breaks or malfunctions then pick up a used kit or a replacement part to freshen things up. take leftover parts and assemble new used bike to let friends ride or train on or ride on rainy days. lather, rinse, repeat. i have a really low budget.
as far as distance/time between switching or buying something? i dunno. haven't had a computer on there for a while.

I'm at 10000 KM now on my Bianchi and have my eye on a couple of frames. I will have see what the bank account looks like in spring maybe the fall of next year so probably the 8000- 16000 KM or 2-3 years. But I'm not in a hurry.

10-15 years, then rotate (road bike becomes basement trainer bike, basement bike becomes slush/dirt/winter bike). So winter bike is typically 20-30 yrs old...

When all my friends had bmxs, I got one. Then when MTBs became popular, I started doing trails with a new MTB. When suspensions started showing up on half the MTB on the market, I got another MTB bike(but no suspension ). When I discovered flatland, I got another BMX. Now I want to be able to ride at a faster speed than I ever could on a MTB, I'm planning on a Cinelli road bike.
I guess my pattern is more based on what I want at a certain time and then save up for it. The longer it takes for me to save up, the longer the interval between bike purchases. Luckily, I still rather be riding a bicycle and not a motor "bike", otherwise I'll never be able to save up for one.
To answer the question, its usually about 2-3 yrs before I buy a new bike!

I assume you mean a "road" bike since this poll is in the road bike forum. Just bought my 06' Six13 last June. And, bought a new 05' Cannondale road tandem last summer. I have a spare bike (92' 5200). So, the only bike I'm needing is another Mtn Bike for winter riding (I sold my 93' Trek 7000 last summer).

been on my steel for about 13 years now, but then it's only got < 7,500 miles in that time (didn't ride for 6 of those years). I'm 41 so my next bike will likely be my last which is one of the reasons I'm holding out for titanium.

I'm like four numbers or an inside straight away from a new bike.
Well, a new bike for me.
Hambone Jr. turns four in November and he wants an old Schwinn cruiser with a banana seat. (I think the thing that irks me the most is that back when Hambone Sr was a little pork-chop -- I had one with a white sparkle seat, a sissy bar and all...)

Not really mileage, but years usually. I still ride my first "real" steel frame as a converted fixed gear, and I shudder t think about how many miles it has on it. Right now I have about 1.5 years on my Giant and I am starting to think about picking up a decent cheap frame to give me a build project for the winter.
I will probably look to upgrade my Giant in another couple of years. Not because I would need to, but rather because I would WANT to.

Hm. I will buy a new bike when I:
a) smash my current one
b) feel that it's slowing me down, which could be a looooong time
Other than that, I dont really see a reason to spend that much money on a pretty new bike.
