Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Finally..my new toy.

I just picked up my Synapse today and did a little riding. It sure is different than my Specialized MTB. Lots of go fast fun though. I can tell that I'm going to have to get some of those silly lookin shorts though. Maybe some padded baggies. Ideas?

Nice bike! Those "silly" looking shorts are not so bad. I wear them on all my rides. Saves my butt.

I like the matte finish on that Synapse and the fact there a fewer Cannodale stickers than usual. Great bike, your going to enjoy it a lot. And, do get proper road cycling shorts!

You're going to love your Cannondale, and DO get some lycra shorts, they're the best, but beware, hairy legs don't go well with them. Baggy shorts are for old men with no muscles

Nice bike! Enjoy it! Also, as mentioned above, you definietly will be much more comfortable if you get some lycra shorts.

Thanks Guys..

Thanks for the replies! I may just have to drop my pride and get some of those shorts. I just got back in from a 45 minute ride and my butt is sore. I did get a couple of compliments on the bike though..I'm in South Texas; I wonder if they would have thrown rocks at me if I woulda been wearing skin tight shorts? They just don't go with a cowboy hat JP

Nice bike! Is the saddle wide enough for you? I've ridden for hours just wearing unpadded mtb shorts, but my saddle is comfy.

Synapse is a good bike. Extremely stable geometry. Very stable in high speed turns. Sucks a bit of your power in a sprint, but if you're not going to race it is a great all day comfortable bike to log a lot of miles on. I'm not sure, but I THINK Giant makes this bike for for Cannondale.

The seat isn't too bad but I think padded shorts might help. I'll give it a couple of weeks and see.

LOL, I tried gettin the reflectors off today but I was worried I was gonna snap a spoke. I'm gonna have to wait to do the job right w/a screw driver or somthing. I just bid on some baggies on ebay so we'll see. JP

Just out of curiosity, how much did you pay for that Synapse?

A little over $1K. I shoulda bargained more but when we went to pick it up, the wife decided that she wanted a bike too. SO....they made me a good deal on a specialized allez for her. Ticket price was $1100 and after some heckling, I got it for $800. The wife was happy and I was too.

Nice bike!

Oh, do yourself a favor and just get the regular lycra shorts. If you're feeling modest, you can wear some looser-fitting shorts over the top of them for awhile. After awhile you'll realize that they're purely function, and not give a rat's arse about what people who've never really ridden a bike think about them. The last thing you want, ultimately, is shorts flapping around when you're trying to ride.

I used to feel the same way, hell I thought Id be the only rd rider wearing sweats in the fall but I just bought a set of lycra pants. Youll feel the same way when you can ride for miles not feeling like you have.

For people who are not hardcore roadies, wearing lycra is hard enough on the psyche. But, to shave our legs on top of that? It's just to much for me.

I ride in Fox baggies with the built in strech liner and chamois. Even though my rides are short (25 miles), the outer short rides up sometimes and binds up around the hip joint/thighs.

I tried on a pair of Pearl Izumi lycras and they were comfortable as God intended man to be on a bike. But, I just can't imagine wearing a pair outside the dressing room. And they did indeed look awefully ridiculous with my hairy legs.

It's not like a live in podunk Alabama. Lycra-clad roadies are abundant in my area. I just can't seem to get over the initial barrier. Funny thing is that I regularly walk down the street barefoot wearing a neoprene wetsuits which is really not that much different than lycra.

I beg to differ. I prefer to ride in a white T shirt and shorts. Then again that is only on the rides I go on that are only 2 hrs long. I figure I wont get those until I get a road bike. Do people wear them when its raining or is the waterproof jacket and pants best for now?

Or pimply 17 year olds that are a bit coy.

Lycra shorts are the only ways to go- Or bibs if you want comfort. Just don't get red.
