Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Biking poster? Need some help

A buddy of mine is running some biking promotion of some kind... he didn't give full details. He knew that I liked photography and asked me to make him " a poster that is everything biking, but artistic. I don't want people and I want it to look odd at first - you know. Give me a clever shot."

Kinda hard guidelines to follow but I think I may have done it. i wanted to get some ideas on here before going to him.

So what do you think?

I like it. At first glance, one would not recognize what it is, but after a couple seconds, those who aren't bike fanatics like most of us would get it.
It gives you basically the motor of the bike; the core of the machine. That's everything biking if you ask me.

Very nice photo, I like the shallow depth of field you used. I did some artsy bike photos a few months ago https://www.pbase.com/steveyau/bicycle

not bad at all, but what's 'artistic' about it?

also, what happens next? will your friend have a graphic designer lay text over it?

as i'm sure you're well aware: it's always a good idea to get the full brief before commiting to any work, otherwise you're probably wasting your time.

Nice image, just not sure what the person wants to say. Non-bikers are not going to see the image as biking.

who is the target market? what is the message he wants to send?

Good luck

Good point.

And, although it satisfys most of your friends requirements, I'm not sure it represents "everything biking".

On the other hand, what would represent "everything biking"?

Very nice shot, it has an industrial feel to it, but I agree that someone outside of cycling might not recognize it. Maybe you need motion? Here's a couple of shots I did that say cycling more than anything else I've done. I've posted them before - sorry if they're getting old.

I'm with ravenmore. Nice image, but cycling isn't about cogs.
