Century cut in half by broken BB spindle

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Century cut in half by broken BB spindle

After 48 miles of the Wright Stuff Century on Sunday my bottom bracket spindle snapped. This was on my 2005 R550 Scattante, with only 1,200 miles. I was lucky that it snapped only 4 miles out of the second food station. Riding with one leg is not much fun but beats sitting on the road waiting for a ride. Got a replacement on Monday and installed it last night, so I'm back on the road. I'll call Performance about the broken BB and warranty today.

Performance said just send it in and they will replace, I might ask for credit instead since I already have a new one. The new FSA Platinum seemed nice on the 30 miles I just finished.

Must have been a CF spindle...everyone knows all CF parts are simply waiting to implode at any moment.
