Discuss ideas for a new Road Cycling forums FAQ here

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Okay. We tried it once before and it didn't work. The old "standard answers" thread was good-intentioned but ultimately fell a little flat due to off-topic posts and a lack of organization.

But seeing the fourth "Can I use Campy with Shimano" thread come up in about a week makes me think we really need to try it again. I know, the lack of search is partly to blame. But wouldn't it be nice to have a nice, comprehensive thread we could refer people to? Someone suggested creating a wiki as well.. other ideas are definitely welcome.

Discuss here. Anyone got any good ideas?

Perhaps we can utilize the wiki engine. That will allow members to contribute stuff in a nice format. We can have a skeletan of headers to start and people can fill in stuff.

What is a compact crank?

How do I get higher/lower gearing?

How often do I lube my chain?

How often to I change my chain?

What is compatible with 8,9,10 sp.? (I'm always getting confused myself)

What's the best tire?
ans: There are a lot of good tires, and everyone's just going to tell you their luck w/their specific tires.

What's the best pedal?
ans: Everyone's just going to tell you what they're using and their impressions.

I'm 6'3" with a 34" inseam, what size bike should I be on?
ans: It's a lot more complex than height and inseam.

There is already an excellent bicycles FAQ here: http://draco.acs.uci.edu/rbfaq/FAQ/index.html

The only thing I would add specifically to this forum is a list of pointers to popular/useful threads that already exist. Maybe also a list of "stupid" questions that you shouldn't bother asking.

A thread of favorite bookmarks would be great. Basically combining a few ideas here:

Chain Lube:
- How? [1-2]
- What types [1-2-3]

Where each number is a link to an existing thread.
