brake pad noise
Hi all,
Just replaced the pads on my brakes and I'm getting a weird noise on the back set. I'm using the Cervelo calipers with DA pads. Didn't have a problem with the old set, but whenever I pull the rear brake I'm getting a squealing noise with a vibration in the rim. Front one, no issue though. It's annoying as he77.
It has been suggested to clean the rim, but any special way to clean the rim surface? other than the dish soap and water I usually use? or any other ideas of how to adjust?
Thanks
f

Double check them, many are marked left, right, forward and back. Make sure they are mounted correctly.

Sorry, 'Toed In"?
I did check their alignment, they sit square on the centre of the rim. I did not check for "Left/Right", but will.

Most pads have a chamfer or taper so that the trailing edge touches first, and "pulls" the leading edge into contact with the rim. It makes them more quiet. It helps to elimate chatter from the leading edge if it touches first.

I got squeaking noises off my WH-550's after I cleaned the rim with soap/water. After a couple of hard braking sessions - it went back to normal....

You can lightly sand the top of the pads if they look glazed over. They shouldn't even be on new pads, however. If the sound presists, swap them out ASAP or you will need new rims very soon.

stapfam: I've used the DA pads before, they were the ones worn out. No issues before.
operator: Why would I need a new rim if I don't swap them out?
simplyred: I'm trying the cleaning.
All: thanks for the responses.

I had the same problem. Replaced the DA pads with Koolstop. I'll never use anything but Koolstop again.

get plain (untreated) green scotchbrite pads at the supermarket. i cut them into strips roughly the width of the braking surface and the pads...
i spritz the scotchbrite pads with windex, and clean the braking surface, and do the same on the pads. not rubbing real hard or anything, but enough to remove ground in grit, etc.

My pads were making noise until I flew down a hill at about 50mph and jammed the brakes on really hard. Now they don't make any noise at all!
