Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

70 MPH down a long steep hill at altitude in Colorado in a heavy fully faired recumbent trike. Nearly got killed before I could get it stopped. On a normal bike 45 MPH on a loaded touring bike coming down Loveland Pass towards Breckenridge.

Mine was only 2 years ago, but I can't remember what is was either. Don't feel bad for not remembering something from over a half century in the past. ;-)

About 165 mph in 1987 in a 1964 Chevelle SS with a race built 350 LT1 with a Holley 850 double pumper! Oh a bike................51 mph and that scared the hell out of me!

And so did the Chevelle ride in my buddies car as I now recall!

yeah, i love that road. Its crazy to think that on my first week of riding, i climbed that mountain, from Douglas County all the way up to lake Tahoe. I personally think its one of the coolest rides. lots of bike lane room, courtieus drivers, and sweeping turns.

I hit 34.8 yesterday and wasn't trying. First time on a new route. This was the first hill of the Boston Marathon! When I ride this route again, I'll be pushing it.

Nice...I've hit over 150 mph in my VW Jetta GLI 1.8T - I don't think the gearing will go much over 160 mph though at redline.

This topic came up at dinner the other night among a bunch of grey beards and their significant others.

I liked the way my girlfriend put it after the guy next to her said "The 'fastest' I ever went was 54mph going down to Borrego Springs." She retorted, "The 'worst' I've ever gone is 32!"

See the difference. Its all in how you perceive it. He thought 'fast', she thought 'worst'. Interesting how each looked at their experience differently.

according to my computer around 68. For some reason any time I hit the mid 30s, it will jump up to the 60s. Anyone know why that is?

40.6 mph the other day on a short but steep hill near Petersburg, VA. The bike felt really stable, and it was cool to be speeding (30 mph town speed limit. I'm a badass). 6 or 8 mph going the other way... what goes down, must come up.

The fastest I have ever gone down hill was 55 mph and I hope I never have to exceed that. It was a hell of alot of fun but pretty scary at the same time. This could also have been the fact that the road was also kind of curvy so that made it more interesting.

41.5 mph - Flat to slighty downhill, pedalling. (This is on my daily commute, 30 mph zone, and a car was TRYING to pass me. Unsuccessfully, I might add! )

43 mph - Coasting down a nice long, fairly steep hill. (On my temporary bike, I spin out at 33 mph on that one)

51.5mph on a decent from Ditchling Beacon in Brighton in the South East of England. Not many hills big enough or steep enough to get up to higher speeds in this area.

48.6mph...I was spinning like a mad man. My computer doesn't have cadence. But sheldon's computer says that with a 50x12@120rpms I'm doing 39.1mph. 50x12 is not a big enough gear.

I'm thinking about just htfu and swapping it out for a standard double and forcing myself to push harder gears when climbing.

I have no problem leaning into corners at faster speeds. There's some nice switchbacks over here that are really fun to go down. The only time I almost ate it going about 40 was when I was pushed further on the side of the road by a car and the transition from the asphalt to the concrete gutter made my front wheel start to wobble.
