Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A good place to buy larger sized jerseys ...

and a good customer experience.

I posted this on the Clydesdale thread which is now the Clydesdale Forum. I hope someone here will benefit from finding a good internet retailler.

A great place to buy Clydesdale jerseys.

I am posting this in this particular thread as it may be of interest to those having trouble finding large jerseys for our larger girth.

I am going to preface this with the fact that when I started riding this year, after a 17 year layoff, I was over 290 pounds. I had Gastric Bypass surgery this past January and knew that this particular tool would be most effective if I also changed my lifestyle and became more active. So after the surgery and losing about 30 pounds I got back on the bike. At first I was only able to wear tee shirts (3XL and 4XL). I knew I would have to find some jerseys to be more comfortable on the bike. So I scoured eBay and the WWW to find 3XL (American fit) and Size 9 (European fit) jerseys. Needless to say the Euro fit search was a bust and there were very few XXXL American jerseys either.

This all changed when I found a place called Behind the Bars. They had much of the Primal Wear collection in 3XL for guys like me. They also had many of Primals older line in stock. So I was able to get many of the fun jerseys I liked in a size that was snug but not too snug. Of course as the season has worn on I have continued to lose weight and girth and now I have a very big problem. It seems that all those jerseys I needed in 3XL now are just too big. They now tend to twist around my body if I don't pack the back pockets evenly in weight.

So here is where the customer service story really comes in. I wrote Paul Ellis of Behind the Bars an email and I explained my situation. Too many 3XL jerseys that I need to rebuy in 2XL (I only need to loose 30 more pounds to reach my goal weight of 200, so 2XL would continue to be the correct size for me). I also have a money manager who said she would beat me senseless if I spent more money on jerseys. So I saved some pennies each week until I could afford a new jersey or two. I asked Paul. to consider a discount of some kind if I would reoder several jerseys and perhaps a break on shipping. I did not hear from Paul in response to my email, I figured if you never ask you never get, but I still needed to buy the jerseys anyway. Since their selection and shipping were always good I re-ordered.

I just came back from Herndon, VA last night to find a package waiting for me. I open it up and find the four jerseys I was able to order. I was very happy that I would have some new duds to sport this weekend. I pull out the invoice, and much to my suprise there was additional discounts on some of the jerseys and there was no shipping charges. I was simply amazed and touched by the gesture. Behind the Bars definately has a customer for life.

I would suggest that anyone looking for larger sizes take a peek at their website (their first mention in this post is a link). They have a great selection and reasonable prices. It is also obvious to me that they are cyclists that care about other cyclists, a great reason to continue to do business with them.
