Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

North Shore Century Ride Report and pics

A fine ride with fellow BF members. Weather held off, wind never went above 30 and we got lots of free Shot Bloks so in my book it was a fun and successful ride:
IMG_0739.jpg
Here is the whole BF gang that started with us

IMG_0741.jpg
After a few minor adjustments of some kind.......

IMG_0742.jpg
Psimet and Aham23 out in front. This was pretty accurate for a good portion of the day

IMG_0743.jpg
The BF gang riding a beautiful paceline, straight evenly paced. It doesn't get any better than this!

IMG_0750.jpg
Thats me early on, a little later the thumbs up would have been a struggle

IMG_0757.jpg
Signal11 crossing the finish line at the Kenosha track

IMG_0758.jpg
Cylowe97 a very unpopular second, notice the all the trash thrown by the thousands of fans watching.

IMG_0759.jpg
and Aham23 on his 3rd or 4th lap

IMG_0762.jpg
Here is aham23 looking in pretty good shape at the 72 mile mark rest stop

IMG_0764.jpg
Cyclowe97- must be telling me that "I am the man!!!" (I hear that a lot)

IMG_0767new.jpg
Here is the finishers photo. Signal11 and aham23 were already gone by the time we made it back and JTM1631 had his knee go south at mile 80. That leave Kenal0, Cyclowe97,Psimet, and Kimbercop?

I wish the roads over the water were as nice as that... It's always a treat when I come accross a nice, smooth, fresh tarmac road.

Looks liek you had a great time, and love the "your the man" pic

Oh and your t-shirt scares me a little ^_^

You are not the first person to say that about the jersey!
It only scares you because The Grateful Dead was probably a little before your time. I on the other hand being 45 and a Deadhead had the pleasure of seeing them live over 30 times when they were together.
I get more people asking me where the heck I got the jersey from.(All older people

It was great riding with you guys. Towards the end, I was trying to keep up with aham23, but he's quite clearly insane. After the 72 mile rest stop, he just cranked it up to about 20-23mph and kept it there all the way to mile 103 or so. I mostly managed to trail behind, sweating profusely and breathing heavy, but he was just laughing diabolically. Hmmm.

Yeah, I believe it was mile 103 when I fell over, literally. Car to the right, car to left, too busy dialing it up to 400 watts to notice..............bam.............i stopped but forgot to clip out and freakin fell over. No damage, but to my pride as there were 5 or 6 eye witnesses.

Despite that it was great riding and seeing those who showed. Too many stop signs, stop lights, and turns for me on the route, but it was still fun. Look forward to the next time. Later.

the motionbased is pretty cool. I like the sat view.
Unfortunately I forgot to turn my Garmin off so when I got home it said 125.5 miles as it tracked my drive home. We went down Sheridan the last 4 miles so we eliminated the last of the turns and stop signs.

The concept of riding for 100+ miles is so bewildering to me.

You guys are unreal.

Someday . . . someday . . .

There must have been some serious hills that Kimbercop and I missed by doing the 50. Did you guys really hit almost 50mph at some point? I topped out at 30mph...

My max speed for the day was 30mph. I can't imagine where anyone would have hit 50. One of the rest areas?

I pegged 36mph, but that was that "downhill" in the begining that I felt like bombing.

The wind was absolutely horrid in places. Aham and I pulled a monster pull in one section that surprosed even myself. Dead into a 15-25mph headwind. We started a train and picked up a lot of riders. Even Aham said his heart rate was getting up there...170ish

I looked down and I was cranking 186. It was wierd because I could still talk, and I had goose bumps.

wierd.

I think I hit about 45 mph during one of the short times I was at the front. The wind kept me from hitting 50.

I'm pretty sure I was in my little ring at the time and there was a semi we were chasing.

Hey all, great ride yesterday.

Kenal0, thanks for the pics. You ARE the man.
Kimbercop, don't you remember finishing the century? You were all happy and posing at the end. Must have been delirious or something.
S_Dog. Next time you're in for the full 100, right? A bike like yours needs more miles!
Signal and aham. You guys are insane. You should be racing.
jtm, where are the BFNIC Fan Club pictures? That was awesome. Hope you are recovering. Don't worry about bonking. We've all been there.
Psimet, thanks for the carpool and the pedals. Next time maybe we check the washers to see if they fit the cleats! Good ride on a tough, tough day.

BTW, Dave342, you need to ride with Signal and aham. You guys would rip it up out there. Monsters!

Forgot to mention this earlier, Kenal0 thanks for the pics!

I seem to have gotten some strange numbers from the Garmin. Some top speeds of 200 mph around miles 80 to 100 and my cadence numbers seem low? Motion Based applies corrections to the numbers and list my top speed at 49 mph, but honestly if I hit that I have no idea when. Damn $300 toy is messing with my head !

Racing?? Do the pros fall over at stop signs? If so, where do I sign up! Later.

Make sure you are up to date on the firmware downloads. If that keeps up then get in touch with Garmin and have the unit replaced. I have not had any kind of crazy numbers like that.

Kimbercop, I bet you just do not remember finishing the century because of the difficulty of the last 20 miles, really took a lot out of you like around 2 feet. That must be why you are the size of a 4 year old in the pic

"Nice, Smooth, Fresh Tarmac"

That was about 10 miles combined on this ride. We were beaten up by many of the roads along the way. Kenal0, Psimet, and I were rockin' the last leg of the ride, basically hitching a ride behind three others. The lead of the other three was a whippet-thin woman, who was driving the pace and did not leave the point. We were loving the free ride and eventually jumped up in line thinking her two riding buddies would just fall in line behind us. Next thing we know, it's just us following the woman (barely keeping up!). Her buddies had dropped away. Then she takes a wrong turn onto Sheridan and we followed blindly. At that point, we were already at 101 miles and knew Sheridan would take us right back to the start/finish, so we just kept on truckin'. Sheridan Road at that point, though, was hideous with bad pavement, potholes, etc. We were getting punished for our wrong turn, but we made it home safely.

It's amazing what following a strong rider will do to the legs when the finish line is so close. We were jamming!

The 200mph must have been where we were being chased by that big pack of wolves in Glencoe. Don't you remember that?
