Clif Bloks?

I was at Performance over lunch, and saw that the Clif Bloks were on sale but didn't buy any.

I haven't tried these yet. How do these things taste? Which flavor seems the most palpable?

I also noticed that the orange flavor contains caffeine. Sadly, they weren't selling any individuals to sample. Before I commit to an entire box, I was hoping for some input.

Anybody like these?

Chopper1 09-21-06 12:24 PM

I love them. They taste great and are really easy to eat while riding. I have not tried the orange, but the yellow/green are good.

woodcycl 09-21-06 12:27 PM

I like them!

Drag 09-21-06 12:29 PM

They had a couple flavors.

Are there any to avoid?

DrPete 09-21-06 12:30 PM

They all taste good. More cumbersome than Clif Shot/GU, though.

Kenal0 09-21-06 12:31 PM

I like the Strawberry ones myself. I was very lucy that the century ride I was on last Sunday had Clif Bloks at every rest stop. I started the ride with the one I brought from home and ended the ride with 12 packs.
A nice in mix in between a clif bar and a gel.

Can these be found at CostCo or Sam's?

Or better yet, where's the best place to get 'em?

cydewaze 09-21-06 12:33 PM

They remind me of those sugar-coated, jelly orange slices my grandmother used to give me, but without the sugar coating.

They are a little more cumbersome than gels, and while you can get away with downing a gel without a swig of water, you will want to have water handy for the Bloks. That being said, I tried them this summer and I likes.

Hey, bring some from your stash for Drag to try on the 1st. (he said offering something that was not his... :o )

nocondorfx 09-21-06 12:35 PM

i tried the orange. not bad

oboeguy 09-21-06 12:35 PM

I think they're great. I've tried a few flavors and like the stawberry the best. The only problem with them is that once the bag is open it's so easy to eat them and they're so yummy that I tend to eat them too fast and get a brief belly ache. :D

Cliff blocks are awesome. After the running leg of my Du this weekend, I switched shoes and threw 3 into my mouth before mounting my bike. They taste 100X better than the regular GUs (of any brand) and are much more enjoyable to take. They're like gummy bears only bigger and squishier. I TOTALLY recommend them if you're interested in the energy shots. My gf bought the jelly belly energy beans and said those are good too, I haven't tried them yet though.

Oh, and I have found I can eat them without water, though I can do the GUs without water and a lot of people can't stomach that. Either is probably better chased with water, but I guess it depends on what you can handle.

Could someone explain better what these are? We don't get Cliff products in the UK so far as I'm aware, but whenever I'm in the States I get a bag full of Cliff Bars and bring them back.

Drag 09-21-06 12:50 PM

From what I've read 'round here, they're like Gummy Bears. :)

kosherdave 09-21-06 12:53 PM

they are like the Gu or Cliff Shots/ energy gels (assuming you have such products) but are in a solid (not liquid) form. They are about the size of the end digit of a pinky finger and square. You eat them like a gummy bear, and they are packed with carbs or whatever to give you energy. They're really good and I assume were made because a lot of people do not like the slimey GU form of these things. Way easier to eat and enjoy. Taste like candy.

Yep, like a package of 6 or so cube-shaped gummies.

This from their website: http://www.clifbar.com/eat/shot_blok.cfm?location=shot

They are little cubes, approx 2cm per side and are 33 caloires each. There are 6 bloks per package.

They are my food of choice in long road races (60-120 miles). I like the taste a lot better than gels, and they're not as messy. I usually start off a race drinking Cytomax, but when I'm out, I usually just get regular water from the feed zones and start on the clif bloks. I ate 8 packages (1600 cal) in a hilly 108 mile road race this summer.

I pre-tear the corners off the packages before the race start and as I grab each pack from my pocket I put 3 in my mouth and the rest of the package under my shorts, just above the knee for easy access later.

And you don't have to worry about putting the expended GU package in a separate bag, to prevent that little bit remaining from leaching into your jersey

So are the Blocs like jelly beans, Wine Gums, Ju Jubes???

shiiieeeet, that is pretty hard core. I ate half a pack before the bike leg of my du this weekend. 8 packs is pretty intense, I think that would be sweetness overload!

BigFloppyLlama 09-21-06 01:12 PM

I find them to be a lot easier to manage than gels. I usually cut off the top and stick it in a jersey pocket so I can just reach back and grab one. They're also delicious, I also have a bad habit of eating them off the bike they're so good:D

cuda2k 09-21-06 01:12 PM

I use them to keep a steady stream of Calories going in during longer rides. I either rip a bag open and put it in a rear jersey pocket, or in a Bento-Bag on the top tube. I take a cube once ever 20-30mins in addition to Gels & drink at longer intervals. Taste great! Strawberry is my fav, though the CranRazz and Lemon/Lime are good too.

Drag 09-21-06 01:14 PM

You guys are convincing me to run back there and pick up a box of strawberry.

So noone likes the orange with caffeine, huh?
