Replacement for Wellgo MG-8 pedals

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacement for Wellgo MG-8 pedals

They are cheap but they don't last long. I broke my second pair of Wellgo MG-8 pedal within a year. I liked the design but the ball bearing is too small and I crushed it into dust in less than 2K miles. Do you know pedal of better quality with similar design. Or any suggestion for pedals on a road-bike which will work with off-road shoes (Sidi Bullet)? I guess I must go for quality off-road pedals now ?

The Performance Forte pedals are SPD compatible and are of a much better quality than Wellgo, but still pretty cheap.

E.g. these two-sided pedals, https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5240, or these platform/clipless, https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5240

(The latter pedals are AWESOME! Much cheaper than the $80 Shimano version, and much better quality than the $25 Nashbar version. But still only cost $30 )

Performance Forte pedals are very often made by Wellgo.

edit: Though, the two that moxfyre linked to do appear to be a step up from the Nashbar versions I've dealt with.

My suggestion - PD-M520 or M540's on ebay. I picked my my M540's for about $50 delivered, and they 520's can often be had for half of that. Which is, usually, about half of retail pricing.

Or get them off of Probikekit.

Thanks for your advise. It was kind of an emergency so I had to buy them at LBS. I choose the M520. I'm very pleased with them. Much easier to clip in, better contact surface, better bearings (of course!) than the wellgo. Does anybody know the difference between 540 and 520 that justify the price difference?

Egads, sorry to hear that. I have 600+ miles on a set of Wellgo Mg pedals & like them. Guess I will have to watch out as the miles accumulate.

I broke my left pedal after 2500 KM. It was my second set of pedals. The first time I though it was abuse use but this time they were on my new bike which I take more care of. Watch for any play of the platform on the axel. It's a sign that bearings are about to colapse and then you have a very limited time before the platform slides out of the axel.

Good luck! For me now Wellgo = no go

Probably weight or precision of the internals. Nothing that should matter too much for recreational use.

I bought a new pair of Wellgo MG-9 (or is it M-9) Look look-alikes. Out of the box, they barely spin. If I try to spin them, they won't even go half a turn. Will they loosen up with use? Or is this just the way they are due to cheap bearings?
