Any shift workers out there?
You know shift workers, dispatchers, or anyone that works extremely odd hours. When do you find time to ride? I work weird hours and need some advice on squeezing in rides.

I work a full time job from 4:00 till roughly one in the morning Monday through Friday and a part time job two or three times a week as a mortoecycle escort for funerals. To answer your question, I ride almost every minute I am not at work or sleeping. I've gone to work without a shower before. God for getting in miles, bad for the girls in the office.

I used to work 12.5 hour shifts. 6 to 6:30, rotating shifts. The night shift was my favorite for commuting. Almost always had light going in and when leaving work. Commuting to work is what took my miles up. But, few have a 6 pm start time.

I work 7 PM-7 AM Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and every other Friday. Taking most Fridays off during the riding season this gives me most Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays for long rides. The days I work I get a 1 1/2 hour ride in before work. To get those daily rides in and not loose sleep time, I sleep 5 1/2 hours during the day but sleep during my 1/2 lunch and 2 morning 15 min breaks. I would commute but would rather ride my 1 1/2 route on nice country roads than 2 45 minute rides in commuter traffic. So far this year I have over 5700 KM so the time is there.

I work mainly 8-5 M-F but being a site safety officer for dismantling clandestine labs can be anytime hours night or day. I guess when you find any spare time take the oppurtunity rather than turn on the tv and vegetate.
It's all about discipline and just doing it. May want to get a trainer if you find outside riding not happening as much as you like and your stuck at home more often.

Until I retired, I worked a 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM M-F std shift or a 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM Mon,Tu,Th,Fr when I was on a 4/10 shift. 6:00 AM is a perfect bicycle commute time if you don't mind riding in the dark during Winter months. Back in the day, I sometimes worked a Midnight to 7:00 AM shift for 1 month. I wasn't bike commuting but had lots of time to ride & commuting would have worked well also, just didn't do it.

Most of my shifts are 2:30-10:30 (or later), with a few 8-4s thrown in for variety. But usually I'm so tired after work morning shifts I sleep, eat supper, and then it's dark. If I work at 2:30, I sleep in but can sometimes fit in a 20 or 40 km ride. So most of my riding especially now that it gets dark so early is done on my days off.

I work 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM, but only work 7 out of 14 days. Every other week I get a 3 day weekend so I get plenty of time to ride. Also bring a bike to work to have a 20 minute ride at lunch. If you happen to see somebody riding the streets of Tacoma/Fife around 2:00 in the morning, it is most likely me.

I work four, ten hour shifts from 10 pm - 8 am. Off thurs, fri, sat. I ride to work every night for the last three years and I love it. On my three days off I usually go on longer rides too, so my yearly mileage is closer to 3000 miles.

5:00 A.M. to 2:30-3:30, get up @ 3:45, I drive 43 miles to work so it makes the trip 86 miles a day.
I usually bike when I get home, from 4:30-5:00 to 6:30. gives me enough time to get at least 23-25 miles in during the week and then longer rides on the week-ends.
