How about a Road Cycling Forum FAQ?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How about a Road Cycling Forum FAQ?

I'm pretty new here - hello, by the way - and I've seen several "How do I remove my dork disk?" threads already. There are often one or two threads on the front page asking what this or that road cycling term means ("Fred," "OCP," etc.). I know that, theoretically, people are supposed to use the 'search' function to try and answer their questions before posting, but we know that doesn't always happen. Heck, I'm guilty too.

Not that any of these repeated questions seriously detract from the experience here, but how about a 'READ THIS BEFORE POSTING/FAQ' sticky with the above information and a few other popular questions answered?

There was a "Commonly answered questions to commonly asked questions" thread a while ago. Started out very well, but soon some of the answers were more like opinions on some topics (Shimano/Campy, etc etc). However much of the thread was quite helpful for many newer riders. I'm thinking of putting together a "Best of the best" list on my website of BF's threads. Mostly including great build threads, very helpful threads (at least in my opinion). I haven't had time to start work on the page yet, but I have started a list of such threads. I'll dig up the link to that common question thread a post it here.

I must say I was impressed with the newbie knowledge thread over in the mountain bike forum as I learn quite a bit from it. It would be nice to see the same here.

p.s. more like how to choose the right bike, how to choose the right tire, adv./disadv. of different materials... etc; but not shimano vs. sram vs. campy

cheritht - the MTB newbie thread is fantastic. However, in my opinion, something simular would be fairly difficult to do for roadies. There is a larger amount of personal opinion that goes into gear selection I think. The differences between Pro2 Race tires and GP4000's or a Trek 5500 or Canondale System Six. In the MTB world, hard tails and full suspension, or downhill bikes are designed for different strengths, and different trade offs. In roadies, usually, the more $$ you spend, the better bike you'll end up with for riding on the road. (exception is if you get a TT bike for climbing mountains in the wind. ) If I ever have a chance, I may try to start to complile a such a post, but I am far from an expert on many topics and learn something new everyday here on BF's from the many many posts from other members.

Here's that link I mentioned before: Standard Answers to Standard Questions: https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/120604-standard-answers-standard-questions.html

no-one will use it.

There will still be threads ad nauseam about "what's the difference between sloping and conventional?" and "why do bikers(??) shave their legs?"
