Garmin Forerunner vs Edge

What's the difference besides one is a wrist model? Anyone unhappy with the 205 models?

For cycling, the Edge is where it is at! The ForeRunner does not have the option for cadence, can't create courses or workouts either....Get the Edge!

Thing is i've already got a HR which makes the extra $166 for the 305 questionable. I could get the 205, use my Polar and only be missing cadence. They use different methods for the altimeter though. Are they both accurate?

Get the Forerunner if you want to use it for both running and cycling. For cycling only, the Edge has more features, a more accurate altimeter, more display fields, and longer battery life for the same price.

Pretty sure the Forerunner 305 has cadence.

Edit: Yes, it does...

"Monitor your pedaling cadence as you ride with the purchase of the GSC 10. Like the heart rate monitor, this self-calibrating, wireless speed/cadence sensor uses the same robust ANT wireless technology to reliably measure and report your pedaling strokes per minute."

Good advice.

I have the Edge 305 and I use it on my roadie and tri bikes. I also have a Forerunner 201 that I got for Christmas 2005. It's cool and I like having it...the 305 seems to be cooler though :)

I just a Edge 305 yesterday, and boy was I surprised at how great it is. The amount of information available on this thing is just amazing. I would agree with johnny99, get it if you're looking for something for cycling only.

The lack of courses on the 301 is a shame but in one area it pwns the Edge: battery life. I get a true 14 hours out of it (and yes I've needed those extra four hours!). That being said, I should pointout that I do combine it with a regular bike computer on each of my two bikes.

After comparing the features on Excel Sports it seems the only differences in the Forerunner 305 and the Edge 305 are that the Forerunner:

1. is about $60 cheaper.
2. the cadence is optional on it and costs about $60 which wipes out the cost difference.
3. it's a wristwatch style

Since I am considering doing a few triathlons and already have an HR I think the Forerunner 205 is the one for me.

The cadence sensor is optional with the Forerunner, but usually included with the Edge. Make sure you check the package details. There are several different versions of the Edge availalbe, with different accessories and different prices. You can buy the base Edge with no sensors, or packages with cadence, with HR, or with both.
