Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Again...in the case of your story...this bizzare thing inside many of us takes over and we have to give chase for some reason. ex-queeze me, but i did preface my remark with an "I'm sorry", which is pretty 'soft' - when it comes to inane posts - by my standards.

I hear ya. It just amazes me you care enough to even hit the reply button sometimes!

I do recall last week you replying "piano, piano" to difuse an implied slight from another poster. That one plays in my mind any time I see things getting chippy out here....

I do my intervals on the bikeway in Griffith Park. Four and a half miles out and 4 and a half miles back. I finish up by winding up, jumping up, to an all out sprint for the last several hundred meters. Sometimes there are people I pass sometimes not. I dont care if they think "Whats up with that a**hole?", but I would rather have them think "Jesus, that a**hole is fast!" But I am sure not talking to them about it as I go by. If they look like they are clueless (meandering around on the bikeay, riding out of their lane) they will hear a solid "on you wheel" as I approach. If it doesnt look like it is safe to overtake them I will slow to a speed and wait til it is safe to overtake them. Traffic in front always has the right of way. And famillies and little kids should be passed with great care. I almost creamed a guy in my finishing sprint the other day , he was messing around with his buddy weaving all over the place on both sides of the bikeway. I was riding straight into the sun and didnt see them til very late. Luckily a very loud "Watch Where You Are Going" cleared him out of my lane , but if I had hit him it would have totally been my fault. I should have been going much slower riding with poor visibillity. But I was at the end of my interval and the whole point is to work near max and then get your max sprint at the end. Messing up one trainig drill would not have been worth crashing, wrecking my bike, being seriously injured, wrecking someone elses bike, causing someone else to be seriously injured. If you want to ride fast it's your job not to hit the civillians regardless of the situation.

When I go to the gym or bike or run, I almost never talk to anyone, I'm trying to work out not chat and make friends. I'm not rude, I just prefer to keep to myself when I work out.

Gotta lighten up a bit. All this complaining about folks not saying hello is a bit ridiculous. No one is required to acknowledge anyone else, even if both parties are enagaged in the same activity. Simply because we all ride bikes doesnt mean we are all brothers.

No hello...so what? Life goes on.....

Not a word, no "on your left", or "passing", or "great day isn't it" or even a "shove it you old fart, get off my road". I just can't understand how someone can be so insecure that they wouldn't extend a slight pleasantry on the way past a fellow cyclist. I couldn't stand it, he got a few hundred yards up the road and was clearly trying to drop me in a manner that showed his superiority. I jumped, then settled into my cadence. In about a mile I caught him, and carefully gathered all the wind I had left, then rode up alongside and quietly said, "Great day for a leisurely ride isn't it?" I immediately turned onto the left fork in the road so I could gasp for breathe without him hearing it.
Yes, I know, I'm a great big 60 year old baby....... but I sure did smile all the way home just seeing the look on his face when I pulled up alongside him. Of course, if I'd continued with him for another 1/4 mile he would have dropped me for good.

Hincapie Bianchi team skinsuit?

Somedays I'm friendly, some days I'd just prefer to ride along and mind my own buisiness. It's not MY problem, it's YOURS.

It's also annoying when a newbie says hi and catches someone off guard and startles them. It's just as bad, maybe worse. I've seen people almost cause crahes this way. It's probably safer to watch the road.

How can you "tell" someone is trying to drop you by looking at their back?
How many people wave to all the cars that go by if you are driving a car?
How many people wave to all the pedestrians as they pass, when they are walking.

this is the same as an insecure jackhole that insists they best know how to spend someone else's money - or posts a "I just bought XXX, is it any good?" type thread.

Worry about yourself.

Pardon him, he's simply too busy trying to be Lance.

If he's passing close, simple safety dictates that he do SOMETHING to let you know he's there. Saying hello isn't required, but "On your left" or a bell (required locally even for the racers etc.) would be in order.

Like with motorcycling, it's part of a "brotherhood". Sure, you get your stuck-up types who think they're cooler than everyone else and can't be bothered, but for many, it's not too much of an effort for a simple wave of the hand or a "hi" when you pass.

I come across very few cyclists on the roads anyway, so it's not like my arm is going to fall off waving every 30 seconds. Hell, from time to time I even get people in cars honking and waving at me, giving me "kudos", etc. I guess roadies are a friendlier bunch around here.

I for one, would like to think that Serotta is pulling a fast one here. He's got too many miles under his belt and too many sweet rigs in the garage to believe that this stuff really bothers him.

okay, i'll say it - "shove it you old fart, get off my road". i can say that because i'm an old fart

i agree with others; i also think there's too much attention to all this. my bottom line - when i'm out on an easier ride, i wave to everyone in both directions. if someone is going my way, i'll also include a "pretty day, huh?" kinda comment. but when i'm doing my intervals, it's different. there's always just enough breath to gasp out "on your left" as i pass somebody, so i don't startle them, but to be honest, i don't even notice anybody on the other side of the road, so they don't get a wave or anything. i'm not trying to be unfriendly, but my coach is trying to kill me, and every bit of my attention is on survival.

But there are people who really don't think like that. And some people are just tired. You're mostly right but there will always be some who just don't feel that way on the road. You can't really tell by looking.
Some motorcyclists don't think that way. Some just don't think about it, even though most do. And yes there are jerks too, but a glance as they go buy is not a way to really be sure what they are thinking.

Maybe he's thinking about something else? Who knows. A bicyclist is more likely to be training, working hard, or very tired than a motorcyclist is. Once at the end of a fast century I had to concentrate on what I was doing, I actually went by friends without noticing. I think I was going fast and thinking about that, I'm not sure.

To me it doesn't matter if the guy was George Hincappie training for the Tour, he should still say "on your left." I had a group of about 8 riders blow by me one day like that - - said nothing. I could hear a strange sound behind me that didn't sound like it was a car; I turned to look over my left shoulder and as so often happens when you do that I may have swerved left only 4-5 inches; the lead guy almost clipped me . . . could have wiped-out the whole pack. I guess then they could have said "on top of you" instead of "on your left . . ."

Now that I ride on more paved trails I get passed since I see a lot of road bikes. I get passed by roadies without notice quite often. I am on a mtb so there are few roadies I can stay with for long. I would say that I get an " on your left," maybe 1 in 5 close passes, maybe 2 in 5. Im pretty sure I dont look too much like some expert rider that would never swerve.
