Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Formul Xero XR1 Wheelset

Caveat Emptor!
I was looking for an inexpensive training wheelset for everday use. I checked reviews here and elsewhere on the net and decided to try the above wheelset. When I spoke to the salesman at Price Point I inquired as to their past experiences with that wheelset, he said they'd hadn't heard any bad things about them, so based upon that response and the reviews I'd read, I ordered a set. The wheels came in last Friday, looked nice, decent looking sealed bearings. Quick releases look identical to the Nuevations, I'd say, odds are they are both produced in the same factory in Taiwan.

I installed the wheels Friday night for use on Saturday mornings club ride. I knew after the second warm up lap around the parking lot I'd made a mistake. Having been riding bikes for about 18 years now I can without a doubt say that the xr1's are by far the flexiest, scariest wheelset I have ever ridden! FWIW, I am 175 lbs, not quiet a Clydesdale.

I promptly removed the wheelset Saturday afternoon expecting to seek a refund from Price Point. After reading the fine print on the back of my reciept, I understood that their policy for reurns/refunds was that the product "be in new/unused condition". So, I decided that before I'd risk blowing another $30 sending them back to Price Point, I'd call customer service and explain the situation. The guy clarified theand "new/unused condition", I explained to him that the wheels had about 30 miles on them, the amount of flex I experience scared the hell out of me and that I was very uncomfortable and feared hat one of them could easily shell out on me an potentiall trash my body/my bike or worse yet, both. He alluded to the fact that I was not the first customer to express concerns or complaints about that wheelset. To which i responded by inquiring as to " why do you still sale them then?" He responded, "because people buy them"
I told him that the only I had thouroughl;y cleaned the wheelset up, that the rims did not show any braking wear, but that the splines on the cassette showed the dings that are inevitable once a cassette has actually been installed an ridden. I emailed the Price Point customer service rep a few pictures of the wheels, yesterday morning, asking them to evaluate the signs or wear as acceptable or not given the situation and to get back with me. No return email, no return phone call. I called back this afternoon, asked the guy if he received the pictures. yes, and that the wear was unacceptable.
My $0.02 worth, I would definelty advise against buying an XR1 Wheelset, and secondly, expect squat from a customer satisfaction standpoint from Price Point.

Sorry about that, thanks for the write up.

I'm more concerned with the response from price point. I've never shopped there, partly because their website looked like crap, with very little product info.

I for sure would have called them on the "he said they'd hadn't heard any bad things about them" comment. Because from the sounds of your customer service contact they had. I just went through this with Cingular. I cancelled my account before the end of my contract but before I did so I called so I knew going in what the fee would be. The rep told me $10 per month per line which came out to $140. Great much less than I assumed. So I called again yesterday and they told me it would be $300...um WTF? I asked why their CS lied to me before and the guy didn't have an answer...at the end of the call he went through that BS about was I happy with my call or whatever they say and I told him I wasn't and that I would be sure to tell everyone I knew and on several web sites not to sign up with Cingular because they lie....he asked me to hold and 5 min later my fee dropped to the $140 I was told a few days earlier.

Good on Cingular for making that right and I bet if you pressed Price Point hard enough they would have as well.

Sorry the wheels are crap.... but you can't expect them to take them back and refund you. The wheels are used and they stated in the return policy that their conditions were. I know it sucks... but people need to be a little more proactive and do some research when they are ordering at these discount mailorder places.

There could be a way around it though.... return them saying that they are defective.... when the new ones come in.... return them for a refund. Yea... it's dishonest. But if you are that torn up about $200 for a set of wheels, it might get you your money back.

You could always sell this set for like $150 on Ebay or something.

FYI... I've read numerous posts from people complaining that these wheels are flexy.... maybe you shoudl have searched some more.

All I know is in the end the made right on their end...I was told the fee would be $140 and it is going to be.

I was generally not happy at all with their coverage, we switched to them because of family members being Cingular customers. We are now back to Verizon and have better cell signal and now that most of the family has switched to Verizon for the reception reason we are again all back on the same network and not being charged min for calls to each other.

They are all probably evil. LOL

I got Xero XR-1's on my Ti bike. Other than a couple pings from stress when I first rode with them, I have no problems yet. And with a tiny drop of oil on each nipple, there have been Zero sounds since. Mine are very stiff. My bet, is your set didn't have the spokes tensioned as they should be. Bad QA from the factory in your case. I also weigh 175#, and they flex about the same or even less than my Rolf Prima Elans.

Take them to someone who builds wheels (LBS), and have the tension brought up to spec for only a few bucks.

These are actually good wheels, but the factory obviously lets a few slip through the QA cracks, which is why they have gotten a bad rep for the last few years. Your problem is actually becoming one that is less and less heard from these wheels, as their QA has actually gotten alot better over the last two years. Two years ago, the older version of these wheels were a nightmare, luckily the new ones are better.

I have Xero-XR1s and had no problems with them in the 500 miles I put on them....I recently replaced them with a set of open-pro/centaurs, but that was not based on any negative experience with the wheel, mainly just a desire for an upgrade and a change in aesthetics
