They were doing frame replacements on the hush-hush, but it was clear that most of these early frames were affected.

I need to understand this...are you saying that they knew there were defective frames and unless they failed, they didn't react on an individual basis? Or were they contacting the owners on record and replacing them and just not announcing it publically?

If they knew and just kept it quiet, that is horrible. I would expec that of General Motors but not a 30 man 'cyclist focused' shop.

not a big surprise. great looking bikes, but i'll never forget that while i was getting fitted to my bike, there was a guy waiting to get re-fitted to his R2.5 warranty replacement.

I've read that the R2.5 has had some bonding issues on the early productions. So why are they only recalling a subset of the 2005 model year?

They knew and were being VERY stingy with replacement frames. If you were not the original owner, or could not prove it, they weren't replacing the frames even though it is clear it was their fault. I know the warranty typically only applies to the original owner but when you build a faulty product and you know it it is better customer service to own up and replace the crap you produced.

This is one of the things I love about Specialized (not saying they have had a similar failure, I have no clue), you walk into a dealer with a defective part (like my Rival saddle a month ago) and they don't even ask they just replace the part because they know Specialized is great with warranty returns and take just about everything.

They have had two issues, lug bonds breaking and bottom brackets separating.
They were replacing them under warranty, but now they have decided to recall them all.
The official story is that the problem was with the early ones only, but that's BS because even later ones were breaking.
This has been going on for over a year, this is the correct response, but way too slow.
Not acceptable for one of the world's most expensive frames.

If you purchased a 2005 R2.5, and have since sold it or given it away, please email the recall coordinator at recall@cervelo.com as soon as possible with the name, phone number, email address and or full mailing address (or any and all contact information you have) of the person who purchased the frame from you, so Cervélo can inform them of the recall process. Please share this notice and website with all your riding friends or bike club.


At least they are honoring post shop sales for the recall.

Oh they knew alright. Matter of fact the gentleman who purchased my R2.5 from me had the bottom bracket seperate from the frame. Cervelo refused warranty because he was not the original owner, mind you the bike was still under 1 year old. I had to have him ship me the frame across the countrty so I could have my LBS do the warranty on it then I shipped him back the replacement. What a PIA.

Gotta tell you...if I had one and it failed and I'd gotten injured as a result, I'd be running that company now...

The damage now is far greater than if they'd just replaced them without even asking if you were the original owner. Goodwill and honesty always wins. The cost of being secretive and dishonest is far greater than the cost of new frames.

Two stories:

1) a local espoir national level athlete had his R2.5 come apart at the headtube while riding. Luckily he was not hurt, or even crash I think.
2) a local veteran racer had his driveside chainstay EXPLODE on his R3 during a club race. Luckily the bike held together enough for him to come to a stop and not get injured. The bike was never crashed and this occured on a flat road (imagine that in Sask!) while he was softpedaling in the group.

I think I'll personally stay away from sub 1000g carbon frames.

I find the serial number range very curious. It is greater than 1700, not less than and 2005 only. This kind of implies that the problem developed later when we all know it goes back to 2004 as well. I can't help but wonder what the deal is with non-affected serial numbers. Different facility? Different batch of material? hmmmmm

before we bash all our chins from knee jerking, there has been No complaints on the R3 or the carbon soloist. .

I feel the real issue here is how Cervelo handled the issue. They had a known issue on there hands for a long time. An issue that could have caused injuries yet they sat on there hands....
