Sad News.....
fellow BFers-
As posted in the QS2-S thread floating around, I am having to get rid of my bike (along with some other stuff) in order to help pay tuition so I can graduate debt-free, w/o loans. I just wanted to thank everyone here for the immense amount of knowledge, support, advice, and laughs provided in the past year or so Ive been hanging out here. This place is great, and I'm sad to say I have to take a break from the sport/lifestyle for a little while.
Dont worry, I wont be gone forever....

That's too bad. Hope to see you back after you graduate. Put a new bike on the top of your list at that time!

I understand allez. I, too, did something similar when I first graduated college back in 1995 ... had to take off from cycling due to 80%+ travel. Didn't start riding again regularly until 98-99'. Good luck!
I PM'd you about the bike also.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Quitter.
Just kidding. Sorry to see a cyclist have to walk away, even if it is only for a while. Good luck.

Best o' luck. Do not stray too far away.
In Old Testament times a sheep that was constantly straying from the flock would have one of its legs broken. It was better to break one of its legs than have a wild animal take it away for dinner.
So .... you've been warned.

Only on "Bike Forums" is it necessary to have a $2,000 bike and $1,000 worth of shoes, shorts, and jerseys to enjoy cycling.
In the REAL world, all you need is a decent 1988ish bike from Goodwill or Salvation Army (at $25 to $75) some tennis shoes, a tee-shirt and a pair of cut-off jeans. About 99% of America's hundred million cyclists have enjoyable and reliable experiences with cycling, without spending more than about $300 to get started and $100 a year for tires, tubes, and tune-ups. Money they rapidly get back from NOT buying gasoline, paying bus fares, or needing a gym membership.
Don't think you have to be "rich" to ride a bike. In fact, the money you will save by riding a bike 300 days a year, instead of driving, will soon add up to a very impressive sum.

Do you atleast have one bike you are keeping?
If you don't have a bike just start going to the Goodwill or other various donation-resell places. Sometimes folks don't know what they are giving away.

Getting a fraction of your money back by liquidating your bike stuff is worth being 100% debt free? Doesn't make sense.

man
sell that thing and do what you need, but don't assume you have to stop riding. find a thrift store bike and fix it up (or literally fix it). my friend spent 35$ on a lugged steel thrift store nishiki. he stripped it down and turned it into a fixed gear and you'd be amazed at the miles he logs and he certainly isn't missing anything from his cycling experience.

I agree with many above, I have never owned a bike worth as much as you will get for the one you are selling, even if you go bargain basement on the selling price... but I still enjoy cycling.
Any chance you would come near Wilkes-Barre in the near future? I have an old 22" Varsity that was paid forward that I should be able to get road worthy in short order (I have the parts ready)... You may not keep up with some of the people on this forum, but when you can afford a nice bike, you will FLY!
20 MPH is over-rated anyway, 15 MPH on a Varsity is great fun...
I expect 10 mph on my 1955 Corvette will be the most fun I will have in the next year.
If you need to be faster than someone to feel good about cycling, then cycle with me... Just ask anyone that road the Covered Bridges Metric.

I second the recommendation to find a cheapy at the Salvation Army or the like. I would get something with eyelets to install a cheap rack for running around campus.
Sorry to hear you need to sell your pride and joy. Just think, with the great job you'll get from that college education, you can go out and get a new Top End machine to adorn the walls of your 3 car garage in the big house you'll have. You know, right above the new BMW. Study hard allez. It'll pay off.

I don't really understand why you got rid of your stuff. I mean how much could you have received for your bike? It isn't like you had to pay for gas, insurance, and maintenence like on a car. If you only had a couple thousand in loans, you would be able to easily pay that back when you got a good job. The interest is tax deductable too.
