Aero Wheels
I'm a little confused. How are deeper rims more aero? I understand that they are great in wind tunnels and all, but what about in the real world? In the real world crosswinds happen more often than anything else. Wouldn't a deeper rim catch more crosswinds?
I live in a windy area and I ride solo most of the time, and I get the feeling that such a wheel would do more harm than good. Is that true, or are aero wheels still more aero even in a crosswind? What is the perfect wheel for a flat and windy route? Weight shouldn't matter all that much, so is a low spoke count the way to go? I'm thinking a wheel with a low spoke count and not a very deep rim would be ideal. Am I wrong? Anybody recommend a wheel that fits this description? |
About all I can tell you is I have a set of 50mm deep Mavis Cosmic Carbone wheels and a set of Mavis Ksyrium SSC. All though the Ksyriums are lighter on the same bike and route I can top out at about 2 mph faster with my Cosmic Carbones on my bike. A deep wheel set IMO seems to be faster on a flat course and yes you will feel the cross winds on the front wheel.

Aero stuff have been tested with differeing wind angles. They still make a difference then. See some of the Zipp literature.
