Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Steel Frame Advice

I am thinking about building me a steel frame bike. Any suggestion on a good steel frame for the money. I will also be doing some searches on this also. Thanks

are you looking for a new bike or vintage. I've seen some pretty nice older frames with new groups...kind of a neo-retro thing. what are you expectation for the bike? is it going to be your full time go fast bike? training bike or commuter?

I have a ritchey that I use for lunch time training rides. steel bike have great rides, but the weight is an issue for me for longer hilly rides.

I'm a big fan of used steel bikes. I recently picked up a Colnago Master in very good condition with a Campag headset and a stem for $300. For prices like that you can't go wrong.

Serotta Fierte Steel. $1,095 for 2005. Not sure of price on the 2006. Difference is that the 2006 has a carbon wheel stay. I have seen several comments that this is not an advantage and go for a 2005 at a negotiated price. I saw a 2005 54cm that went for $695 on E-bay. In fact I recommended that frame to a guy on a Forum that was also looking for a steel frame and he bought it and thanked me much. Hope this helps. I have a 2005 and love it.

Without a budget this is impossible. Always a number of Jamis steel road frames on scambay.

My wife has a Fierte and the LBS happened to have an older all-steel model on hand, so she rode both, extensively. She liked the carbon stays so much better, she decided it was worth the 6-week wait to get one. It really rode smoother on the chipseal.

Every once in a while a gem pops up on ebay. The problem is that often you are outbid by someone willing to pay too much. I guess that's the point.

You can also check the classifieds at roadbikereview.com.

Kelly Bike is going out of business and is selling his stock off at over half off. I don't know how much is left though?

Others I don't think have been mentioned:

Salsa
Strong Frames
Alpine Designs

And of course you can find all kinds of frames on ebay. I always see a Indy Fab Crown Jewel going for a good price.

1,095 for a Serotta steel frame?...that's awesome!
