Rear Facing Drops



So, I thought I read somewhere on the net that rear facing drops were superior to vertical drops that are most common today, and I remember the comments focusing on the ease of removing the wheel more quickly than vertical drops. . . i there any validity to this or is it all made up? Opinions anyone? I would love to hear them. Thanks

I know they are helpful on TT bikes that have the wheel recessed into the seat tube. They make it so you dont have to deflate the tire when you are changing wheels.

The first bike is a TT bike for sure. The disc wheel is the biggest tipoff. I would imagine that the second bike is the same frame just painted.

IMHO, it's easier to change a tire with track ends. For one, you can play with the chainstay length to snug your tire as close to the seat tube as possible depending on tire width. A second reason is that you'd (potentially) be able to assert way more force on your chain without the fear of your hub jumping out of the vertical dropout (although to be fair, this is not something I'm particularly worried about).

Well, with trackends, you don't have a spring loaded RD cage to give slack. Just saying.

1)rear facing dropouts are designed for fixed gear bikes, so that you can adjust the chain tension. They serve a function there. They don't serve a function on a multispeed road bike.

2) you don't need rear facing dropouts on a TT bike, to fit the wheel behind the seat tube. My Griffen has vertical dropouts, and the tire rides a couple of mm's from the seat tube, and there's no problem removing a wheel with an inflated tire.

3) It definitely would be harder to remove a wheel on a multi geared bike with rear facing dropouts. With Vertical dropouts, a little pull back on the derailleur, and wheel drops straight out. With rear facing dropouts, you'd be pulling against the chain, and tending to make the chain wrap on the cog, rather than releasing from it.
