Todays Gloves are terrible
I have a pair of Cannondale gloves from the mid 80's. The glove is a
half finger and made entirely of very good leather. Palm is padded
beautifully with an extra layer of leather. Where the knuckles are
is an open mesh of cotton keeping the hand cool. These gloves are
fantastic and sure wish they were still being made instead of those
nylon things they sell for 30 bucks and more. You guys should have
had the opportunity to try these gloves. You would have purchased
a couple of pairs.

I've seen a few threads about bad gloves. I don't get it. I have a pair of Pearl Izumi something-or-others that are about five years old, have thousands of miles on them and get thrown in the washer once a week. They still look really good. The red backs are a little faded is all.

I miss a pair of Etexe-Ondo (sp?) gloves I had back in HS. They were the stretchy sort, but so comfy! Don't know what ever happened to them.

These are good, with a leather palm, adiprene foam padding, half mesh top for ventilation, terry toweling thumb for wiping and reflective 3 stripe highlights.

My most comfortable riding gloves aren't riding gloves at all, they're Footjoy Wintersof golf gloves. Too hot in the summer, of course, but great in the spring and fall.

Nope, don't miss the old days of cottom mesh gloves. Lets see, the thick rawhide leather was real nice at first, until you took sweaty gloves off your hand. Next time you went to use them the leather was hard and frozen in the contorted shape you left them in. It took a little while for them to loosen up back on the road.
Sweat on the brow? Ouch, that cotton mesh doesn't wipe very nicely.
Nope, I'm very happy with synthetic palms (or different leather/tanning process) that stay supple, terry cloth thumbs, and wicking material for the backs.
Does anyone miss the old helmets made of stuffed leather strips? I didn't think so.

I've got an old pair of crocheted back gloves with leather palms/half-fingers, and Spenco Gel padding. I've had 'em for years, and they are now pretty beat. I wish I could find a comperable glove, but haven't come across one yet.
Too bad, they're the best I've ever had.

Well, I have two pairs of Nike gloves, the ones they issued to (back then) USPS Cycling...got them in 2000, who knows how many miles, washed, still going strong.
I also have the new Cannondale Carbon with the leather palms, fantastic glove...you have to hand wash them due to the leather palm, but these are great.
But then I don't want padding...all I want is protection if I fall. The less glove the better for me. The Nike's are minimalist, too...just a tiny bit of double protection across the palm.

They're not bad, a bit more padded than the
old leather/mesh gloves of yore.
I have a love hate relationship with gloves.
I either love em or hate em.
Jury is still out on the Etxe gloves

Get out of the "get everything at the LBS" syndrome and look around at other options! Having been a mechanic and using impact wrenches I soon learned the benefits of using mechanics gloves made for use with impact wrenches. These gloves have gel inserts, which absorb the shock of that hammering impact wrench on your joints. There also made of quality material so they will not fall apart under heavy use. You can purchase them for all weather conditions as well. Bicycle specific gloves are extremely cheaply made compared to mechanic quality gloves and will last you through many years of hard service. Granted, you may pay a higher price for some than you would at the LBS, but the quality is so much better and the service life is very long. Mechanics impact wrench gloves are just great for use with your bike! The link below is where I purchase gloves and I love the shirts as well, cost is much less expensive than bike jerseys, your not a rolling bill board, and you stay dry and cool as well. I am not associated with this company except for being a satisfied customer.

I'll have try those Nashbar gloves. A few years ago, at the Seattle swap meet, a guy was selling NOS CyclePro crocheted gloves for $6 & I picked up several pair. Just began using the last ones this year & haven't found any good gloves since. Don

A lot of trash was made in the past too. Only the good stuff survives, so we think it was representative of those times.

The problem with most of the riding gloves for me is the lack of support/padding between my thumb and fore finger. Where my hand sits while holding the bar on top of the bars. After awhile that gets pretty sore and its seems like a better pair of riding gloves would help. Nothing so far has made much of a difference?
