Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stupid Sigma twist lock computer desgin!....::rant::

well.... today was gorgeous... blue skies, 60 degrees, slight breeze.... riding my new Reynolds Alta Race (excellent wheels for the money!).... and then....

I go to check my numbers on my brand new (only second ride) sigma wireless 1606L DTS with cadence. When all of a sudden I hit the button to check my avg. speed and BAM! the sigma goes flying forward and hits the ground at 25 mph. As soon as it hit I knew it was done for.

I turned around hoping for the best and found a blank screen with some road rash on the sides. Nothing seems to be jarred and I can't hear anything rattling around but the poor guy didn't stand a chance (I really liked that computer too!)

Rant: WHY you a company design a product that has buttons on the corners which when you push it activates the locking mechanism to RELEASE the computer from it's mount!? I am soo bummed I just broke my $70.00 (bought at LBS to support) computer. I guess it is back to the old Astrale 8 or a cateye wireless... at least they know how to make a locking mechanism.

rant over: All in all it was an a good day. We got a buddy out riding with us and is now hooked.

p.s any suggestions on a new wireless computer with cadence?

I haven't tossed mine yet but I can see how in the heat of the moment it might get dislodged. I guess I've had Sigma computers long enough that I must automatically use a finger to stabilize it, who knows? Anyhow, as much as I like (it's great!) the very same model you're, ahem, replacing, I may leave it on the folder and replace the older, wonky, wired Sigma on the road bike with something else. I occurs to me that a rear wheel sensor is a good thing for riding a trainer (which is in my future). Anyhow, my point is, I'd like to hear the suggestions too!

for the trainer I just use a cateye Astrale 8.... it's wired but has cadence. Great computer... I like how the sigma had avg. cadence and the stopwatch for intervals..... it's ashame that mine broke before I got to use it.

I'll talk to the LBS and see if they can give me a dela or see about warranty. If I have to pay full price then I am defintely NOT buying another sigma until they change the design to make it more idiot (me) proof.

I began a ride with my Astrale not fully clipped in the other day and it bounced out of the mount as I hit a small rut and bounced into the centre of the road. It was subsequently run over by a Chevy SUV.

Didn't crack and didn't fail. I ran over when traffic halted, picked it up, and threw it back onto the mount and it still works perfectly. Barely a scratch on it.

WOW! Really Impressed. I sent this email to Sigma yest.:

recently purchased the 1606L DTS wireless bike computer with cadence. On
my second ride I was going to check my avg. speed (button on the bottom
right) when I pushed it the computer went flying off the mounting bracket
(twist lock system released).

I was going 20+ mph and the computer didn?t survive the fall. Everything
looks ok except a small scratch on the one corner. Nothing rattles but the
screen is just blank, even after checking the battery and making sure it was
installed properly.

I was shocked that the computer came off so easily (twist lock mechanism)
and am really sad that I just broke a $70.00 USD dollar computer that had
less then 30 miles on it.

I was wondering what could be done if anything. I understand that this
probably would not be covered under warranty due to the impact, but was
wondering if I could get a discount on just the computer. I really enjoyed
all the features the 1606L DTS offered, especially the excellent wireless
signal, average cadence, and stopwatch (something my Cateye Astrale 8 did
not have.)

However I don?t think I am going to be buying another sigma computer if I
have to pay full price. I found the computer to be too easily released and
as a result just ruined a $70.00 dollar investment on the second ride.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
----------------------------------------------------

Here was their reply:

No worries. The first batch of BC 1606L DTS heads came with a ever so
slightly smaller mounting bracket. Therefore, they can come off
easily...and it's not pretty at high speeds. If you can send me the old
head, I will send you a new one (with the corrected mount) out ASAP. Send
it to the address below and include a note with your name, address, phone
number, and what happened.

Thanks,

Jenni Nichol

UPDATE:

Sigma sent me a new computer for free to replace the one that broke stating that they screwed up in the manufacturing process.

Now I just have to see if this one will stay on the bike

Either way I was impressed with Sigma's customer service. +1,000

Isn't it great when things work out the way they're supposed to? I emailed cateye about a replacement computer expecting to have to beg/plead for a replacement but didn't have to do either.

I'm glad things worked out for you!

I have the bc906 computer and the mount cracked in two places, and I've only had it like two months. I sent it back to them for a replacement hopefully that doesnt take to long cause I like to know how fast... or slow I am going.
