So why bother with any brand name frame?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ferraris are made by hand...and yes, I would like a hand made car over a manufactured on on an assembly line. a hand made bike is made by a craftsman who has years of experience and cares about what he builds, not someone that puts a bolt on a part.

You can have whatever you can afford. If you had the money I bet you could even get them to build it on site for your entertainment. But for the rest of us we want to ride a "quality" bike with the benefit of remaining cost conscience.

Take a look at instrument strings, which is probably a lot better comparison to a bike than is a car. Machine wound strings will give consitant wraps and tensions, making the frequency of having a dead string almost non-existant, (not that it doesn't happen every now and then). Hand wound strings, on the other hand, made by artisans and experts, aren't going to have the same level of consitancy, resulting in a higher number of bad strings. Unless I'm spending $6k+ plus on a bike, I think that I'd take a frame produced by automation any day of the week.
