Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brand New 2004 Trek 5900 SL

LBS has a new leftover (3x) Trek 5900 SL. It is full Dura Ace and I have to say...I really really like the looks of it.

I've been waiting for the new Orbea Orca to hit the floor but I keep looking at this Trek week in and week out and I think I might dig it.

Couple of questions....anyone ride one and if so how do you like it? Also this is a 2004 so I would expect a deal....he has 4400 on it for a price...but told my wife that he would take 3800 for it. What do you guys think of this.....bear in mind that even though it is 3 years old...it is still brand new.

The 5900 is also 110 OCLV which is what all but the highest end Madones are currently made out of.

Here is a link to a very similar bike.

i bet u could get it for 3500. if its a couple years old, he is dieing to get rid of it. plus, he'll probably break even at 3500 or maybe make a couple bucks.

good luck!

btw, i have a trek 5200 and really like it. im sure it rides well!

Personally, I'd hold out for the Orca. But I'm biased against Treks (for no rational reason). Just for comparison, check www.gvhbikes.com to see what $3800 can get you. I'm not saying buy there... just check it out as a reference point. Some awfully sexy Italian goodness available for that price.

I like the 52/55/59 series a lot, especially the 5900. Frankly, they are outstanding bikes. My only comment would pertain to the drivetrain group. I really like the newer Shimano 10 speed and, this particular Trek will have the older 9 speed. Still, it's a lot of bike for $3800.

My local LBS has the same thing, wants an absolute fortune for it, $4500 I think. Seems ridiculous to me. I really like the bike, but, I might be tempted to fork out $2000 for it, it's just not worth it now.
Save your money for that new shiny Orca.
There are some principal similarities between high end road bikes and high end cars, we've all read them here before, so here's an example. A coworker of mine won a $91,000 Maserati a couple of years ago. When the car was brand spanking new it was hot, but as the weeks and months passed and newer models of drool worthy elite cars were introduced, it became more and more ordinary.
By the time they tried to dump the car, mind you it only had 100 miles on it, and they passed on an offer for $75,000, for which they thought they could get more, yeah right, they wound up licking their wounds for $58,000.
There's a certain type of customer shopping for supercars and superbikes, and that customer only wants what's brand spanking new on the roads. A brand new 2004 Trek 5.9 is worth about as much as a 2004 Trek 1500 in the eyes of the upper echelon buyers, but maybe that's just my observation.

It has 10 speed on it. I counted the cogs myself on the cassette.

I don't see much sexy Italian goodness in a full carbon fiber frame there....am I missing something?

I didn't say anything about carbon. If you're set on carbon, then he doesn't have much in that price range. As I said, it was just for comparison... another data point, if you will. If I had close to $4k burning a whole in my pocket, I'd probably be looking at one of those pinarellos or pegorettis... but I understand that is apples nad oranges.

Orca!

It looks good, but $4k is tooo much. A lot of brand new carbon bikes in the same level go for about as much.

I'd take that bike out for a test spin and see if it still strikes your fancy after a couple of turns. If you can get a good deal on it, I'd pull the trigger. I'm partial to sticking with an American made product, but regardless that's a sharp bike. I'm on an '06 5.2 Madone SL (also OCLV 110), and absolutely love the ride. I test rode the Orca and it's great too, but for me the Madone just felt better. Good luck with the decision

What do you think a good deal is? Original MSRP was 4800 dollars...it's down to 3800....I wonder if he will go any lower?

I test rode an 06 Orca and was unimpressed. I wish like hell the LBS would finally get the 07 in...I really don't want to buy a bike only to have that sucker show up a few days later.

Even still...if I love the 07 Orca it is still 5k plus for a Dura Ace bike.

It's the older OCLV frame when Trek was making the lighter Madone's...and it's got the older "tuning fork" seat stays, when on the better stuff Trek was doing the "A" stays that they have on the Madone's...round tubes, not much ride tuning compared to the newer models.

You could get a 5.2 SL for less...it would have Ultegra, but who cares? MSRP (which no one sells for) for the 5.2 Madone is $3,690.

I'm a little confused. Is it a 5900, or is it a Madone? If it's a Madone, it should have a shaped top tube, like this bike:

(Lance Armstrong's US Postal Service-Berry Floor Trek Madone SL, 2004)
https://www.cyclingnews.com/teamtech0...ikes/usps_trek

This is a 5900:

As for your question, Trek OCLVs are amazing bikes, and probably do not get the credit from this crowd that they should. The Orbea is no doubt a nice bike too, and is definitely not as common as the Trek. That said, I think you should ride each bike, if possible, and decide which one fits better and feels better. I was sold on a Kestrel until I rode it back-to-back with an OCLV.

Another thing to consider is warranty. Orbea's website says they have a lifetime warranty. Trek definitely has a lifetime warranty, and they mean it. I know many people who have gotten new frames over things that could easily be considered normal wear and tear. Trek's warranty is very hard to beat.

Good luck making your choice. Either way you'll have an awesome bike.

I've got an '03 5900 and love it. The only neg is the non-standard headset and fork which the '04 didn't have. I am not the original owner but Trek still replaced the lower headset bearings for me. It seems to be working fine for me as of now. Some have had Trek replace the fork with a standard 1 1/8 steerer and sleeve the headtube but I don't think even Trek would do that for a second owner ($$$$). If the problem returns I may ask though.

It's not the most comfortable bike (pretty stiff) but it has not kept me from doing many centuries on it. In less than two weeks I will be doing a 24hr TT so it can't be too bad.

Look at my signature and you can tell what I think of the Trek OCLVs. I love the 5000/52/55/59 line.

That having been said...on to the 5900. I still think $3800 is too much money for that bike. Why? Because my LBS has a 2006 Madone 5.2 SL "Project One", all hand painted bike in the shop for $3800. It has Ultegra 10spd, but even so..this is a brand new handbuilt, handpainted bike with an absolutely gorgeous finish on it. I'd say $32-3300 tops. Or order a brand new Madone.

Great reference point. I haven't made him an offer or even negotiated seriously yet so I don't know how firm his 3800 is. I didn't want to stroke him around until I have seen and ridden the new Orca....however that has been delayed twice already and I am sick of waiting.

BTW...not sure where you live, but the Project one Madone at my lbs is a 56cm.... just so you know... shipping a bike is not that expensive either.

I also have an '03 5900. Great bike...many thousands of miles of races, group rides, tons of training, crashes, etc on it. Has been totally reliable. Only problem I have run into is replacing the headset on the proprietary '03 fork...which shouldn't be an issue on the 04+...

And its an awesome climbing machine. Stiffness everywhere you want it. As long as your motor is running up to par, hehe

Best of luck

Does your LBS have a website? Which Project One theme does it have on it?

I don't know either, but I could've sworn I read Madone somewhere on here, lol! Too early in the morning I guess. Oh well, the last part I wrote below the pics still applies. Good luck!

I agree 3800 is too much, it's just sitting around in his shop. I'd pay 3200 if I really wanted it. I would probably get a 5.2 or 5.5 madone instead of the 5900, only because it's newer stuff. I'd rather have ultegra 10 speed over dura ace 9 speed. You won't notice the difference between DA and Ultegra other then weight. I have a 2003 5200 and love it. If you can get it cheap and really like it go for it.
