If you would like to know what it's like behind the scenes at these races, then you'll enjoy them. Things like flirting with the podium girls, rumaging through a rider's run over lunch bag, drinking beer with Paul and Phil, road painting, and taking a shower in the rider dressing room in Roubaix. Don't expect anything similar to Overcoming or Hell on Wheels.

Yeah..I thought The Hard Road was just o.k. as well. A pretty good flick that covers American riders and races is Pro. http://www.prothemovie.com

No thanks....I don't know why, and I know it's just me, but I have a hard time being interested in the American racing scene.....and I work for Healthnet and we have the top domestic team 3 years running !!!
I just like the European scene better....

probably the same reason why one gets more excited watching the Yanks compared to watching the Bridgeport Bluefish.

Even though you know that the minor-league athletes are 100X + more talented than us, it's still not THE big show.

I agree...:)

I noticed too how much bigger most of the domestic cyclists are compared to their European counterparts too. Is this sort of natural selection at work ?? Longer and/or hillier (is that a word ?) courses in Europe lend themselves to smaller, lighter cyclists ???? Or, looking at the American cyclists that have been sucessful in Europe, (Lance, Greg Lemond, Bobby Julich, etc.) they tend to be smaller & lighter as well
Or is something else at work ?

Just curious....:D

to give you an example. back in '92, or maybe it was '93, davis phinney won the killington stage race. IIRC he did this by winning the first 'mountain stage' of the race, the defended his lead. when asked how he, a sprinter, could win a mountain stage, he replied (more or less) - compared to europe, these are only hills. :)

Yeah, Tour Baby is more of a view from the roadside rather than from the team vehicle. If you want to see the big boys crying after a hard race, watch Overcomming or Hell on Wheels (both AWESOME), but don't dismiss Tour Baby, it's pretty entertaining, those other flicks don't bother to hang out with the podium chicks, get their hair cut with Jacky Durand, or ask Pascal Herve about what he's eating after the race.

THanks for the heads up on this one, I may have to get Cobbles Baby for those trainer rides.

;)

Yeah unfortunately it's getting to be that time of the year when folks are thinking of things to watch on the rollers...:(
When do we turn clocks back ??? I'll get a few more (cold) morning rides in for awhile when we do that...

John Wilke 10-12-06 04:48 PM

Clocks go back Saturday night, Oct. 29th. - the night I always get stuck working - and it's an hour longer! :(

So how many of those Europros won the San Francisco GP again? The Sea Otter? Georgia? Tour de Trump?

Europe has the BIGGEST races but those are very few and far between and the best races here are better than 90% of the races there.

Overcoming > Pro/Hard Road.

I haven't seen Hells on Wheels so can't comment on that.

WTF are you smoking?

Do you honestly believe that statement? If you do, then I guess also believe in Santa Claus and that Saddam's had WMDs too.

If 4 Euro Pro riders demolition of the peloton at the US Pro Champs wasn't proof that the domestic US scene leaves something to be desired, then I don't know what is.

By the way...I finally got a copy of The Rider by Tim Krabbe.
I'm about a quarter of the way through it....it's great !
It's amazing that the guy who wrote this wasn't a cyclist ????
I'm trying not to blow through it too fast....It's not a big book.

flythebike 10-13-06 01:01 PM

You can get Hell on Wheels on Netflix!
