Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fizik Cork Tape Is Garbage!!

Went out and bought some of this cork tape (not gel) and I can't tell you how disappointed I was in trying to wrap this expensive lame stuff. First of all, it doesn't stretch a bit and even if you wrap as tight as possible the edges catch and flair upwards when running your hands or gloves over them. What was Fizik thinking when releasing this crap. I'm taking this junk back to the LBS today but had to vent here before doing so. I'll stick with Profile or Bontrager. Believe it or not my Felt OEM tape is the best I've ever seen so I may just order from Felt's website instead.

eh I like it. My favorite to date is Specialized tape. They sell a couple of different varieties. I think the kind I use is their gel tape, but without the gel insert stuff. It's at https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqP...jsp?spid=16336

really comfy, but not overly thick and reusable!

I"ve been using Specialized S-Wrap for a while now and been really happy. Easy to rewrap if you make a mistake along the way. I've also heard good things about the Deda stuff from lots of people too. Sorry to hear that the Fizik stuff let you down, but there's plenty of other choices out there.

For the record, I found Cinelli cork to be difficult to work with and short even more my 40cm bars (though they were a deep drop). It was one of my first times wrapping so technique could have something to do with that too.

I use the Fizik Microtex tape and I love it, I am not looking for my bar tape to be like a feather pillow for my hands though. . . .

Funny you mention Cinelli. I tried this too prior to the Fizik and it was difficult as well. The tacky stuff they put on is horrible. Good luck trying to remove the tape in a year. You'll need a bottle of Goo Be Gone to remove the adhesive.

One thing to note on the Microtex Fizik crap...even my wife said the stuff sucks and she's not even a biker!

I've had three Fizik saddle and I've broken them all. Two regular Ariones and they both broke in the middle, no crashes. I had a carbon Arione and crashed that and broke it so not really their fault. But I'm hardly surprised at your experience, given mine. And I'm not fat or real big or anything.

Velo make a great thin gel-backed, non-sticky, but flexible and easy-to-wrap bar tape. Easy to re-wrap too. I love it.

I just installed new handlebars and my prior ones had the cinelli cork tape, and it was a pain to remove, and now my old handlebars are all tacky.

What's everyone's feelings on the grippiest tape? i.e. one with a bit of friction between the tape and glove or bare skin. I hate "shiny smooth" tape that lets you slide all over. . .

Cinelli cork tape rocks. (By the way, you do not have to remove every last bit of the old tape's adhesive before applying the new tape.)

Salsa Goma bar tape is very grippy, albeit, it doesn't have a ton of padding underneath it.

+1 but if you want to, Goo Gone is the thing to get.

Hmm, are tapes just marketing gimmicks? I use a $3 performance/forte tape (it was in the bargain bin). No gel, no sticky underside, goes on easy. It's thin, the way I like it, holds up really good.

How big an upgrade if I buy one of the "fancy" ones".

Also I've seen the tape that look like steering wheel covers. Leather, perforated, with stitching on the sides. What are those?

I'm right with ya, but my tape of choice right now is the cheapy stuff from probikekit.com. It's like $2.38 or something. I like it, but it's not very grippy. . .

The only tape i have ever liked is cinelli cork, but i haven't wrapped a bar in 8 yrs. I didn't realize there were better options. I like a bit of padding.

why does tape need to have absolutely great adhesive? I reused the Felt bar tape when I changed handlebars and I either used Cinelli or Profile bar tape on my commuter. It's all in the wrapping technique. I rewrapped my friend's bars with used fuji tape with absolutely zero glue left on it.
