27" to 700c
 

how easy is it to change from a 27" wheeled bike to a 700c? I am planning to get an old bike that has 27" wheels and replace them with my 700c wheelset with the same speed (6spd). Brake caliper reach issues? any issues with the derailer?

This has been discussed at length several times on the C&V board. Main concerns is the brake caliper reach. If you can lower the brake pads 4mm down, you should be in pretty good shape. Longer reach brakes are also out there to swap if needs be to get the reach you need.

On the extreme low end (<$40 each), I know there are plenty of 27" wheels around, but what about for 700c? I can only seem to find performance oriented wheelsets in 700c.

Your current levers need to be able to extend at least 4mm down if you're switching from 27" to 700c.

You can get a "modern" 700c front wheel for like $40. Rear will cost more. These are like generic reals, so nothing super bling, but they are out there.

Tektro makes a brake caliper set with a reach of 55 to 73 mm. That might get you close to being able to use 700s on your frame. Lots of info on this over in the vintage forum.

I had an old Raleigh SuperCouse that I threw 700s on just for kicks...a little turn of the allen wrench and the bike was good to go.

If you've got access to a set of friend's wheels or a shop will let you use a junker wheel you could check to see if you need anything besides just the wheels.

i changed out the wheels on my old Peugeot, also 27" to 700c. the original calipers could accomodate it, but they sucked to begin with. i ended up getting Nashbar's long-reach calipers. $30, they work a lot better. i know some people scoff at Nashbar products, but hey, it gets the job done, and inexpensively.

Those look like rebranded tektros to me. If that is the case, they are good calipers. Just throw away the pads once you get them.
