How do you blow your nose on your bike?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How do you blow your nose on your bike?

I was following in a group the other day and got hit in the face by a rider who blew snot all over the riders behind. I was not impressed. Some riders move off the line, look behind and blow. Maybe I'm just not hardcore, but when we are training hard and our imune systems are low, the last thing any rider needs is a face full of cold or flu virus. I carry a hankerchief in my niks and find it much more effective than spraying other riders. What do others think? To blow or not to blow - that is the question...

either wait until i'm at the back of the paceline, or simply move there, and blow. if that's not a realistic option, then i move slightly over, and take care of business. if that's not an option, then i blow it down, in the vicinity/on to my legs/TT.

when I get hit by schmucks who blow snot/spit without looking I generally make my displeasure known to them, and offer to reciprocate in kind.

I always move to the back of the pack before I let one fly. It's fun trying to hit cars as they pass though.

I normally ride alone or with a couple other people so this is not really a problem. If anything, bringing a snot rag along during a ride seems extreme. I would fill that thing up in the first 20 minutes anyway.

Yeah, I keep a box strapped to my seatpost.

Seriously, I just point like it's a road hazard, and blow between my ribs and elbow, straight down. I move slightly out of the line, taking crosswinds into account.

It depends on how serious the ride is though. In a race, you're on your own for drafting off me. In group ride I'm much more polite. Still, blowing straight down eliminates the majority of the problem. You might get a guy's shoe, but not likely.

There is the overspray though...

the only reason why there would be some, marginal at best, justification for blowing snot on the guy behind you, would have to be something like a wheelsucker in a break.

otherwise, a race is NO justification for blowing snotrockets without a care in the world, and only an a$$ would think as much.

I got hit in the face in a race once. I was drafting the guy and hadn't noticed he was slowing down and drifting to the back of the pack. Before I realized what he was doing, he took a quick look and shot, not seeing that there was still one idiot (me) on his tail. When he noticed, he apologized, but it was yucky!

I can't seem to shoot snot rockets, so I sniff or wipe on my glove.

+1
with the sniffing it usually drains back down, so I'll spit it out and off to the side.

I once had a this masters guy ride in front of me (in a race) who was hacking, coughing, and whaling snot all over the place........Nasty mo/fo.
I asked him to do that at the back of the group... and the dude went all psycho..
started cussin' and calling me names. needless to say we hit a big hill and dropped the guy. after the race I saw him in the parking lot... all 5'4" of him (I'm 6'2"). When I approched him he got all apologetic and tried to make a million exuses for his behavior.... I just laughed and told him to bring a hanky from his mom next time...... I never saw him at any more races that year.

Snot goes here...

Nice absorbent back...don't have to gross anyone else out, or lose my pack position. Throw the gloves in for a quick wash, and you're good to go.

What is the appropriate name for this type of "on-the-go" nose blowing? I practice it, mind you, just curious as to what it's called.

First, I have never understood all these riders in the pack who need to blow their nose. And then of course the A-holes who do it anywhere without regard for those behind.
I need to blow my nose on a ride well, almost never. I don't think I did it once this year. Whats going on with everyones noses? I find if I ride on the rare occasion I have a cold, then my nose actually clears while excercising on its own.

And yes, if you do need to blow then move over to the side, and check behind you for GOOD clearance before letting it fly.

Some of us have the affliction that is know as allergies. I for one am allergic to pollen and when my primary area of riding is all farmland, it gets quite rough during the spring.

Maybe we just need to add more Snot Threshold Intervals to our offseason training routine.

My wife uses the purple hanky she keep stuffed in the lag of her shorts. I wipe my nose on the thumb of my glove, then wipe the glove on my butt. Spitting or blowing is just a waste of precious hydration, recycle.

I've found that by clenching one's fist and inserting the knuckle of the index finger into the opposing nostril, that you can actually get greater distance with a short burst. The key is to keep the burst short. A long burst can result in "HANGERS" and those inevitably get caught in the wind and end up flying up into one's glasses. I fire "over the shoulder".
